A 28-year-old US Army veteran tragically passed away moments after completing the Silver Strand Veterans Day Half Marathon in San Diego, leaving family and friends in shock. Scottie Williams, who had rebuilt his life after struggling with PTSD, collapsed near a water station shortly after crossing the finish line. On-site medics performed CPR for nearly 90 minutes, but Williams could not be revived.
Williams, a native of California, had previously served as a transport driver in Korea and Syria. Upon returning from Syria, he battled PTSD and was eventually rated 80% disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Despite these challenges, he found ways to reclaim his life, working at a ski resort and embracing a lifestyle close to nature.
Two days before the race, Williams shared a special moment with his mother, Katherine Yglesias-Herrera, via FaceTime, showing her his new San Diego apartment and revealing his plan to secretly marry his girlfriend, Bree Rivera. Rivera had been waiting at the finish line, unaware that tragedy would strike so soon.
In San Diego, Williams had found happiness near the ocean, enjoying a supportive relationship and the healing environment of the coastal city. His mother described him as the happiest she had seen him in years.
The news of his sudden death has left the local community devastated. His body was returned to Ridgecrest, where residents, police officers, and fellow veterans lined the streets, waving American flags in a poignant tribute. A GoFundMe campaign has already raised over $20,000 to support funeral expenses. His funeral is scheduled for next weekend.
Williams’ mother hopes that people remember her son for his resilience, kindness, and the inspiring journey of a young man who overcame trauma to embrace life fully. "He was an amazing person, one of the best people I’ve ever known," she said, urging the world to honor his memory.
The family is awaiting autopsy results to understand the cause of the sudden collapse, while tributes continue to pour in from friends, fellow veterans, and members of the running community who were touched by Williams’ courage and spirit.
Williams’ story is a poignant reminder of the hidden battles many veterans face and the strength it takes to rebuild a life marked by trauma, determination, and love.
