Indonesia is in mourning as it confronts the devastating aftermath of catastrophic floods in Sumatra. In a sincere gesture of support, several regions, including Jakarta and Bali, have opted to forgo New Year fireworks celebrations this week.
The floods and landslides affecting North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh provinces have resulted in over 1,100 casualties and have displaced around 400,000 people. Entire communities were obliterated, prompting authorities to focus on rebuilding homes, bridges, and critical infrastructure. Government reports estimate recovery costs to exceed $3.11 billion.
Prasetyo Hadi, spokesperson for President Prabowo Subianto's office, stated that the central government backs the regional decision to cancel fireworks. He highlighted that this action embodies national empathy and solidarity with the victims. “It’s essential that we demonstrate compassion and unity as a nation during this disaster,” he shared with reporters.
In Denpasar, Bali, police have officially prohibited any fireworks displays, mirroring the Jakarta government's similar ban in the capital. Residents are urged to refrain from lighting fireworks, maintaining a quiet remembrance for those impacted by these calamities.
Several regions in Sumatra remain under a state of emergency, with local and national authorities collaborating on rescue and relief operations. Over 20 villages have been entirely washed away, leaving thousands in dire need of shelter, food, and medical assistance.
The government is prioritizing the reconstruction of vital infrastructure, including homes, roads, and bridges. Support is being extended to displaced families as efforts continue to restore normalcy in the most affected areas.
By canceling its celebrations, Indonesia seeks to honor the victims of this tragic natural disaster and redirect resources and attention towards recovery initiatives. This decision has garnered widespread approval as a poignant symbol of national unity and compassion during a time of sorrow.
