Widespread Flight Disruptions Hit IndiGo with Over 200 Cancellations

IndiGo, the largest domestic carrier in India, encountered major operational issues on December 3rd, with more than 200 flights facing cancellations or delays. This resulted in significant frustration for countless travelers nationwide. The airline has issued a public apology, admitting to “significant disruptions across its network for the last couple of days” and expressing regret for the inconvenience experienced by passengers.

According to IndiGo, the mass flight cancellations were triggered by several unexpected operational challenges. These factors included minor technological issues, adjustments to flight schedules for the winter season, adverse weather conditions, and heightened traffic congestion at various airports. Additionally, new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) applied to crew members further impacted scheduling, leaving the airline with little flexibility to manage unforeseen disruptions.

The situation worsened due to Cyclone Ditwah, which affected coastal states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. A report from Hindustan Times noted that an emergency software update for Airbus A320 aircraft, introduced during the weekend of November 29-30, disrupted crew scheduling, exacerbating delays amidst stringent regulatory compliances.

The widespread disruptions were particularly noticeable at significant airports. Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport reported 19 canceled departures and 21 arrivals, while Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport saw 62 domestic cancellations impacting key routes including Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. At Mumbai airport, 33 flights were canceled, prompting passengers to check flight statuses before heading to the airport. Kolkata's airport recorded 10 cancellations with a total of 85 delays, affecting connections from major cities.

IndiGo pointed out that part of the operational turmoil was due to a pilot shortage, linked to stricter fatigue-management regulations implemented in July and November 2025. These new FDTL rules demand longer rest periods for pilots to mitigate fatigue, complicating scheduling for airlines like IndiGo, which runs approximately 2,300 flights daily.

In response to the disruptions, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation and requested IndiGo to provide a comprehensive report detailing the causes and mitigation strategies. Data from DGCA indicated that in November, IndiGo canceled 1,232 flights, with a majority related to crew and FDTL issues, along with disruptions caused by air traffic control and other factors. These incidents led to a steep decline in IndiGo’s on-time performance, dropping from 84.1% in October to 67.7% in November.

To address the ongoing issues, IndiGo announced “calibrated adjustments” aimed at stabilizing flight schedules and enhancing punctuality over the next 48 hours. The airline stated its teams were tirelessly working to lessen passenger discomfort by arranging alternative travel solutions or providing refunds where necessary. Passengers were advised to consistently check flight statuses prior to traveling.

Despite these efforts, as of December 4th, reports confirmed that IndiGo was still dealing with delays and cancellations throughout the country. Visual updates from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport highlighted ongoing disruptions, symbolizing the challenges the airline continues to face in overcoming this operational crisis.

IndiGo's flight disruptions illustrate the difficulties faced by India's leading airline in managing regulatory adherence, crew availability, and traveler demand, especially during periods of increased operational stress and adverse weather conditions.
