In a major law enforcement action, Hyderabad police have deported a Nigerian national who had been residing in India illegally for over a decade. The operation, coordinated by the Hyderabad Narcotic Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) and the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), underscores authorities’ commitment to curbing illegal foreign presence and associated criminal activities.

The 43-year-old, identified as Johnkennedy Chukwuemeka Okoro from Imo State, Nigeria, first arrived in India in 2012 on a business visa. Over the years, he moved between Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, with police confirming that both his passport and visa had long expired. Using multiple aliases, including ‘Hopy Cup’ and ‘Jeksa,’ Okoro allegedly integrated himself into local networks potentially linked to drug smuggling, earning what authorities described as “easy money.”

Acting on credible intelligence, H-NEW apprehended Okoro within Asif Na gar limits in Hyderabad. While no narcotics were seized during the arrest, the police highlighted his prolonged illegal stay and suspected criminal involvement as serious threats to public safety. Following verification of his identity and securing the necessary travel documents, he was deported back to Nigeria.

The H-NEW, formed specifically to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse in Hyderabad, has been increasingly tracking foreign nationals whose visas have expired and who may be engaged in illegal distribution networks. Since its establishment, the agency has deported over 20 foreign nationals for illegal stays and criminal involvement, with a large number of cases recorded in the current year alone.

Authorities emphasized that citizens remain a key part of maintaining safety in the city. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or information related to drug abuse and illegal foreign residents. Parents are also urged to monitor their children’s social circles to prevent potential exposure to narcotics.

This case reflects a continuing challenge for Telangana authorities in balancing law enforcement with the monitoring of long-term foreign residents who may exploit legal loopholes for criminal gain.
