Many people use the space under their bed to store things like boxes, clothes, old papers, and other items. It seems like a simple and useful idea, but experts say it may actually affect your sleep. Interior designer France Brunel shared that storage under the bed can create a feeling of “unfinished business” in the brain, which may keep the mind active even when the body is trying to rest.

Brunel explains that even if we cannot see what is stored under the bed, our brain still knows it is there. These items can represent things we have not dealt with or completed. This leads to a sense of mental load. The nervous system stays slightly alert, which can stop the mind from fully relaxing. As a result, sleep may be lighter, restless, and less refreshing.

This idea is also supported by the concept of cognitive load. When there is clutter around us, even if it is hidden, our mind uses energy to remember it. This reduces mental clarity and deep rest. The brain keeps sending signals that there is more work to do, even during sleep.

Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese practice of arranging living spaces, also advises not to store objects under the bed. According to Feng Shui, this space should be open to allow the free flow of “chi,” or life energy. When the space under the bed is blocked, energy in the room becomes heavy. This may disturb emotional release and peaceful sleep.

Brunel suggests removing everything from under the bed, cleaning the space, and allowing air to circulate. She says that an empty and open space beneath the bed can help the body and mind relax more easily. The bedroom should feel calm, light, and free of hidden clutter. After clearing the space, many people notice deeper and more peaceful sleep.

This information is meant to help readers understand how their living environment can affect their wellbeing. However, sleep issues can also have medical causes. If someone continues to face sleep problems, they should always speak with a healthcare professional.

Creating a clean and open space around where you sleep may bring more rest, calm, and comfort to your nights.
