The summer in the UAE is very hot. Sometimes, the temperature goes above 45°C, which can be dangerous. Every year, many people suffer from health problems like dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke because of the extreme heat. But if you follow some easy tips, you can stay safe and enjoy the summer.
If you live in the UAE or are visiting during summer, it is important to know how to protect yourself and your family from the heat. This article explains simple health tips that everyone can follow to stay cool and safe.
The UAE is a desert country, so it has a lot of sun and hot weather. Many people like the warm weather, but summer can be very extreme. The temperature often goes above 45°C, especially in July and August. Some areas feel even hotter because of the hot winds called shamal.
Hot weather mixed with humidity can make people sick if they are not careful. That’s why it is important to stay prepared.
Here are some health problems that can happen if you do not protect yourself from the heat:
Dehydration: Your body loses too much water, making you feel weak and dizzy.
Heat Exhaustion: You feel very tired, sick, or faint because of the heat.
Heatstroke: A dangerous condition where your body becomes too hot. You may feel confused, get a high fever, or faint.
Sunburn: Your skin gets damaged from staying in the sun for too long.
The good news is, you can avoid all of these problems by following some simple steps.
This is the most important tip. Your body loses water fast in hot weather. You should drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Always carry a water bottle when you go outside.
Avoid drinks like coffee, tea, or energy drinks because they can make you lose more water. Fresh juices, coconut water, or drinks with electrolytes are better.
Wear clothes that are light in color and made of cotton or other soft materials. Loose clothes help air pass through and keep you cool. Dark-colored clothes make you feel hotter. You can also wear a wide hat, sunglasses, and carry an umbrella for extra protection from the sun.
The sun is strongest between 12 PM and 4 PM. If possible, stay inside during this time. Plan your outside work in the morning or evening when it is cooler.
The inside of a car gets very hot in just a few minutes, even if the windows are open a little. Never leave children, pets, or anyone inside a parked car. It can be life-threatening.
The sun’s rays can damage your skin. Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or more before going outside. Reapply every few hours if you stay outside for a long time. Sunscreen helps prevent sunburn and skin damage.
Heavy or spicy food can make you feel sick in the heat. Eat light meals like fruits, salads, and yogurt. Fruits like watermelon, cucumber, and oranges help keep your body cool and hydrated.
Use air conditioners, fans, or cool curtains to keep your home cool. Close windows and doors during the hottest part of the day. If you don’t have AC, you can visit malls or other cool places to stay comfortable.
Be careful if you or someone around you shows these signs:
Feeling dizzy or weak
Sweating a lot or not sweating at all
Fast heartbeat
Nausea or feeling like vomiting
Headache
If you see these signs, go to a cool place, drink water, and get medical help if needed.
Many people in the UAE work outdoors, like in construction or delivery jobs. The heat can be dangerous for them. The UAE government has a midday break from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM in summer to protect outdoor workers.
If you work outside:
Take breaks in a cool or shaded area.
Drink plenty of water.
Wear protective clothes.
Tell your boss if you feel sick.
The UAE weather department gives alerts when there is extreme heat. Listen to the news, check apps, or hear radio updates. Avoid unnecessary travel during heatwave warnings.
Check on your family, neighbors, and pets during hot days. Older people, young children, and people with health problems need extra care in extreme heat.
The UAE summer is very hot, but you can stay safe by following these simple health tips. Drink water, wear the right clothes, avoid going out during the hottest hours, and know the signs of heat illness.
Whether you live in the UAE or are just visiting, these easy tips will help you stay cool, healthy, and enjoy the summer safely.
