Hong Kong's last major opposition party has taken a big step toward ending its operations. On Sunday, the Democratic Party held a special meeting where its members agreed to start the process of disbanding. This decision comes as the party faces increasing pressure from China, especially amid a nationwide crackdown on security.
In recent months, senior members of the Democratic Party said they had been warned by Chinese officials or their representatives. They were told that if the party did not disband, it could face serious consequences, including possible arrests.

The Democratic Party was established in 1994, just a few years before Hong Kong was handed back to China after being ruled by Britain. Since then, the party has been a key voice for the opposition in Hong Kong, working to push Beijing for more democratic reforms and to protect the freedoms of the people.
During the meeting on Sunday, party leader Lo Kin-hei told reporters that 90 percent of the 110 members who attended voted in favor of creating a three-person committee. This committee will handle the party's disbandment process, taking care of legal and financial matters.
Lo expressed his hopes for the future, saying, "I hope Hong Kong's political parties will continue to work for the people." He explained that the party had always aimed to serve the people of Hong Kong and do what was best for society.
Once the committee has completed its work, the party will hold a final vote on whether to officially dissolve. This vote will be held in the coming months, and for the disbandment to happen, at least 75 percent of the members must agree. While Lo did not specify an exact date, he mentioned that the process could take until next year to finalize. However, until then, the party will continue its usual activities.
This move marks the end of an important chapter in Hong Kong's political history, as the Democratic Party has long been a central figure in the fight for democratic rights and freedoms in the city.
