Hong Kong offers rewards for the arrest of 2 Canadians and 4 activists

Hong Kong police have issued new arrest warrants for six activists who are currently living outside of Hong Kong. These activists are wanted for crimes related to national security, such as secession (breaking away from China), subversion (overthrowing the government), and working with foreign countries to harm Hong Kong. The police have also set rewards of 1 million Hong Kong dollars for information that leads to their arrests.

Among those on the list is Tony Chung, who was once the leader of a group called Studentlocalism, which supported Hong Kong's independence. Also named in the warrants are Carmen Lau, an activist based in the UK who was once a district councillor in Hong Kong, and Chloe Cheung, another activist who works with the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong.

This new round of arrest warrants shows that the Hong Kong government is targeting activists who are speaking out from abroad. This is part of a larger crackdown that started after major anti-government protests in Hong Kong in 2019. Many pro-democracy activists have been jailed, while others have fled to other countries.

Tony Chung, who is in the U.S., reacted to the arrest warrant by saying he was “honoured” to be the first person accused of breaking the national security law twice. He added that he would keep fighting for Hong Kong's right to decide its future. Chloe Cheung, who is based in the UK, also posted on social media, saying she would continue to fight for what she believes in, despite the threats against her.

Carmen Lau also spoke out, urging countries like the UK, the US, and the EU to impose sanctions on Hong Kong's government for violating human rights and targeting activists. She also called on these countries to support Hong Kong's right to decide its future.

Human Rights Watch criticized the Hong Kong government's actions, calling the arrest warrants a "cowardly act of intimidation" meant to silence people in Hong Kong. The organization urged both the UK and Canada to protect the activists and stand against Hong Kong's efforts to threaten them while they live in these countries.

This new round of arrest warrants brings the total number of people wanted by Hong Kong to 19. The other activists on the list include Chung Kim-wah, who was once a senior member of a polling group in Hong Kong, Joseph Tay, the co-founder of a group in Canada that supports Hong Kong, and YouTuber Victor Ho.

Additionally, the Hong Kong government has cancelled the passports of seven people wanted under national security law. These include former lawmakers Ted Hui and Dennis Kwok. This means that these individuals cannot use their passports to travel and cannot deal with any funds or properties in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong government is using its national security law (known as Article 23) to target those who oppose it, even living in other countries. These actions are part of a broader effort to silence Hong Kong activists and limit the freedoms of those speaking out against the government.
