Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has reiterated that the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft programme remains fully stable and on track, even as investigations continue into last week’s fatal crash at the Dubai Airshow that claimed the life of an Indian Air Force pilot. The incident on November 21 had raised concerns globally, but India’s defence aviation establishment insists the aircraft’s overall performance record remains strong.
During the National Security Summit hosted by ANI, HAL Chairman and Managing Director D.K. Sunil described the Dubai crash as an “unfortunate event” and stressed that the LCA Tejas has consistently proven its reliability across years of testing and operations. He said the company has “full confidence” in the fighter’s capabilities and assured that there has been no impact on the ongoing production or future roadmap.
The Tejas performed multiple high-speed manoeuvres at the Dubai Airshow before the single-engine jet went down around 2:10 pm local time during an aerial display. Wing Commander Namansh Syal, a decorated IAF fighter pilot from Himachal Pradesh, lost his life in the crash that sent shockwaves through India’s defence community. The Indian Air Force immediately ordered a detailed probe, which is currently examining technical logs, flight data and communication records to establish the cause.
Despite the setback, HAL says production timelines for Tejas remain intact. The company currently has orders for 180 aircraft, with manufacturing expanding as new facilities come online. One challenge has been delayed engine deliveries from GE Aerospace, but HAL maintains that overall schedules have not been derailed.
With the fighter already demonstrating high interest in multiple regions, plans for exporting Tejas remain in motion. Officials say that with capacity ramping up, sending the indigenous jet into international markets is the next natural step.
As the IAF continues its inquiry, the force has paid tribute to Wing Commander Syal, calling him a dedicated and skilled pilot who served with “unwavering commitment.” Further updates are expected once the investigation team submits its findings.
