In a Premier League clash between two title contenders on Sunday, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland scored early, but Arsenal struck late to secure a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium. What followed Haaland’s strike was an uncharacteristically defensive performance from Pep Guardiola’s side, showcasing tactics rarely seen from the usually possession-dominant champions.
Haaland, back to his prolific best, opened the scoring in the ninth minute. The Norwegian striker sprinted upfield and finished a precise return pass from Tijjani Reijnders, marking his 13th goal in just eight appearances this season across club and country.
City then adopted a deep defensive setup, allowing Arsenal to control possession but limiting clear scoring opportunities. Guardiola, known for prioritizing ball control, fielded a 5-4-1 formation, bringing on additional defenders to protect the lead. The strategy resulted in City averaging only 32.8% possession — the lowest recorded by a Guardiola team in a top-flight match, according to Opta statistics.

Arsenal, however, had the last laugh. In the third minute of stoppage time, Eberechi Eze delivered a precise ball over City’s packed defense. Substitute Gabriel Martinelli latched onto it and lobbed goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to secure a dramatic equalizer. Martinelli continues to emerge as a potent impact player under manager Mikel Arteta this season.
Reflecting on City’s unusual tactics, Guardiola said, “We don’t try to come and play like this. But when the opponent is better and we defend deeper, we can use the counterattack with players like Erling and Tijjani. Our intention is not normally to defend this way, but at this level, sometimes you have to adapt.” Defender Ruben Dias added, “It was nice to have safety in numbers and a goalkeeper like Donnarumma behind us. We are proud of our performance and how we behaved on the pitch.”
The result leaves Arsenal second on goal difference, trailing Liverpool, who lead the table by five points after just five games. Arteta commented on Liverpool’s dominance: “They win every match. It will be difficult, but if we play at this level, like we did against Manchester City, we will be fine.” Meanwhile, City is already eight points behind, indicating that Guardiola is willing to tweak his team’s approach deep into his tenure.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Aston Villa ended a five-game goal drought but settled for a 1-1 draw against 10-man Sunderland. Matty Cash scored a long-range strike in the 67th minute, but Sunderland equalized through Wilson Isidor in the 75th. Newcastle, rotating their squad after a Champions League defeat to Barcelona, played out a goalless draw at Bournemouth, leaving manager Eddie Howe still seeking his first win against his former club.
Sunday’s matches highlighted strategic adaptations, late drama, and the ongoing unpredictability of the Premier League, with tactical shifts and late goals continuing to influence title races.
