A friend recently asked me for help finding a good smartphone. He wanted something that would cost less than ₹50,000, would last for years, and could be trusted in uncertain times. What stuck with me was the idea of living in "uncertain times." With prices going up and job security feeling unsure, buying a phone is not a small decision. That's when I thought of the Google Pixel 9a.

The Pixel 9a is not a flashy phone, but that’s what makes it a great choice. It focuses on what really matters: good performance, simple design, great camera, and long battery life. It’s a Pixel phone, so it brings the things people love about Pixel: smart software and good updates, just at a lower price.

I’ve been using the Pixel 9a for a few days, and here’s what I think. The design is clean and simple. The usual camera bar is gone, and it now has a smaller, pill-shaped cut-out for the camera on the back. The flat back means it doesn’t wobble when placed on a surface, and there’s no dust collecting around the camera. The phone might not grab attention at first, but it’s easy to like the more you use it. It’s light, not too big, and feels more expensive than it really is. Even my parents found it easy to use, which shows it’s built for all kinds of people.

The screen is bright and clear. It’s 6.3 inches, which is just the right size. I had no trouble reading it outside in the sun. The 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling and switching between apps smooth and easy. The edges of the screen are a little thicker, but it didn’t bother me much after using it for a while.

When it comes to performance, the Pixel 9a has Google’s Tensor G4 chip. This is the same chip used in the more expensive Pixel phones. I didn’t notice any slowdowns while using apps or playing games. Everything ran smoothly. The phone comes with a little less memory (RAM) than the higher-end models, so some of the fancier features aren’t available. But unless you care about those features, it’s not a big deal. Even the iPhone 16e, which is a competitor, also skips out on some of these advanced tools to keep the price lower.

One big change with the Pixel 9a is the battery. The battery life has improved a lot. It comes with a 5100mAh battery, which is one of the largest in a Pixel phone. I used the phone a lot over the past few days for calls, taking notes, photos, and videos, and the battery lasted all day. I didn’t even need to carry a power bank, which was always needed with the Pixel 8a.

In short, the Pixel 9a is a phone that just works. It doesn’t try to do everything. It focuses on being reliable, easy to use, and affordable. In these uncertain times, it’s the kind of phone people can count on.
