The Golden State Warriors secured a thrilling 137-131 overtime win against the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night in San Francisco. The game featured standout performances, clutch plays, and a high-scoring duel between Stephen Curry and Aaron Gordon. The Warriors had just opened their season with a road win over the Los Angeles Lakers two days earlier.
Denver led 125-123 in overtime after Aaron Gordon hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining in regulation. Golden State quickly responded as Curry drained a 34-foot shot just 4.1 seconds later to tie the game, sending it into extra time. The dramatic finish set the stage for a tense overtime battle between the two Western Conference rivals.
Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 42 points, including an impressive 10-for-11 from three-point range. He teamed with Al Horford and Jimmy Butler III in overtime to spark a 12-2 run, including a Horford three-pointer and Curry’s layup with 23.9 seconds left, ultimately sealing the win for Golden State. Curry’s leadership and scoring proved crucial in overcoming Denver’s strong challenge.
Aaron Gordon delivered a career-best performance with 50 points, surpassing his previous high of 41 set in 2017. He also hit 10 three-pointers, matching Terry Rozier’s record for threes in a season opener and narrowly missing J.R. Smith’s Nuggets franchise record. Despite Gordon’s exceptional shooting, Denver fell short as Golden State’s balanced attack took over in the closing moments.
Nikola Jokic contributed a triple-double with 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists, marking his fourth consecutive season opener with a triple-double. Jokic tied NBA legend Oscar Robertson with his fourth career triple-double in a season opener. His performance kept Denver competitive throughout, but he could not secure the win for the Nuggets in overtime.
Golden State’s win was not just about Curry. Six other players joined him in double figures, including Jimmy Butler with 21, Jonathan Kuminga 14, Draymond Green and Al Horford 13 each, and Brandin Podziemski and Buddy Hield 11 apiece. Draymond Green also recorded eight rebounds and eight assists, contributing both offensively and defensively to the victory.
Jamal Murray scored 25 points and added 10 assists for the Nuggets, while Tim Hardaway Jr. contributed 10 points. Denver led by as many as 14 in the first half, but Golden State’s efficient shooting, teamwork, and clutch plays in the final minutes allowed the Warriors to complete the comeback. Gordon’s remarkable effort highlighted Denver’s talent, though it was not enough to secure a win.
The Golden State Warriors showcased resilience, teamwork, and skill in overcoming the Denver Nuggets in an exciting overtime matchup. Curry’s 42 points, combined with key contributions from teammates, helped the Warriors extend their strong start to the season, while Denver’s Gordon delivered a historic individual performance that fell just short of victory.
