Authorities have officially identified all 25 individuals who perished in the devastating fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Goa. Among the deceased are 20 staff members and five tourists. Family members and friends gathered outside Goa Medical College on Sunday as officials announced the names of those lost in the early morning inferno. Notably, four of the tourists hailed from Delhi, with three belonging to the same family, while one was from Karnataka. The rest of the casualties were nightclub employees from various states and neighboring nations, such as Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, and Nepal.
According to police reports, the fire erupted shortly after midnight on Sunday, triggered by a suspected cylinder explosion that ignited massive flames within the club, situated in Arpora, approximately 25 kilometers from Panaji. Eyewitnesses suggested that the blaze may have originated on the first floor, where many patrons were dancing when smoke first appeared. Chaos ensued as nearly 100 people were on the dance floor, leading many to scramble towards the lower floor and kitchen area, where escape routes were effectively blocked, trapping guests and staff alike. authorities confirmed that at least 14 of the deceased were workers, while the remaining were tourists and local visitors.
The nightclub, a beloved venue along the Arpora river, featured a narrow entry and exit point. Because of the constricted lanes leading to the establishment, fire engines were unable to reach the site directly, positioning nearly 400 meters away, complicating rescue efforts significantly. This delay, coupled with the rapidly spreading flames and thick smoke, transformed the venue into a deadly trap for many inside.
Officials released a complete list of the deceased, confirming victims including Mohit, Pradeep Mahto, Binod Mahto, Rahul Tanti, Satish Singh, Manojit Mal, Churna Bahadur Pun, Surender Singh, Subhash Chetri, Jitendra Singh, Sumit Negi, Manish Singh, Vivek Katwal, Sabin, Sunil Kumar, Digambar Patir, Rohan Singh, Dominic, Manoj Jora, Sudeep, Ishaq, Saroj Joshi, Vinod Kumar, Anita Joshi, and Kamla Joshi. The four tourists from Delhi and the visitor from Karnataka were confirmed as guests, while the others were employed by the nightclub.
Investigations into the precise cause of the fire and any potential safety violations continue. This tragedy has sparked critical discussions about emergency preparedness, fire safety equipment, and crowd management at entertainment venues in Goa. Many patrons and locals expressed their shock at the typically crowded club being the scene of such devastation on a weekend night. Rescue teams reported challenging conditions due to smoke, heat, and limited access routes.
This incident marks one of Goa’s most tragic nightclub disasters in recent memory, bringing about calls for enhanced safety measures. Authorities state they will provide further updates as forensic teams conclude their investigations and accountability is pursued against those responsible. The community is united in mourning, as families demand justice and stricter safety regulations to prevent future tragedies. The fire underscores the immediate need for improved fire safety protocols, better emergency access, effective crowd control, stringent regulatory oversight, and more efficient rescue operations across nightlife venues in the region.
