Jasem Al Budaiwi, the Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, delivered a stark warning against the perils of biased media coverage during the Israel-Gaza conflict on Tuesday. Emphasizing the role of media in shaping perceptions, he cautioned against the distortion of truth by vested interests, particularly in conflict zones.
Drawing attention to the global ramifications of the Gaza conflict, Al Budaiwi underscored its transformative impact on international norms and standards. In an interview with The National in March, he highlighted the far-reaching consequences of events in Gaza, asserting that its repercussions extend far beyond the region's borders.
Addressing the Arab Media Forum, Al Budaiwi stressed the pivotal role of media in the region's advancement while acknowledging the challenges posed by the proliferation of social media. He expressed concerns over its misuse, ranging from promoting illicit activities to influencing political narratives and economic dynamics.
Al Budaiwi called for stringent regulations to govern the use of technology in media, advocating for fairness and privacy protection in the era of artificial intelligence.
The Arab Media Forum, part of the broader Arab Media Summit, convened at the Dubai World Trade Centre, with Mona Al Marri, Vice Chairperson and Managing Director of the Dubai Media Council, delivering the opening address. Al Marri underscored the importance of media in fostering dialogue and representing diverse perspectives, particularly in times of adversity.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai, reiterated Dubai's commitment to supporting the media industry's growth, emphasizing its role in preserving national values and heritage.
The forum witnessed the participation of esteemed figures including Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, and Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed, Chairwoman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, alongside prominent media personalities and thought leaders from across the Arab world.
