Labour Party, poised for a significant victory on July 4, faces a crucial rift with once-loyal Muslim supporters over leader Keir Starmer's refusal to endorse an unconditional Gaza ceasefire. This issue has particular resonance in northern England constituencies like Keighley and Ilkley, where a sizable Muslim population could sway election outcomes.

Historically, about four in five UK Muslims supported Labour, a bond strengthened since the 1950s and 1960s by Pakistani worker migration. Recent polling, however, indicates a notable defection among these voters, potentially reshaping traditional voting patterns.

Labour candidate John Grogan, campaigning in Keighley, acknowledges the contentious nature of the issue, noting that local mosques are divided, some even advising against supporting major parties. On the doorstep, Grogan encountered skepticism regarding Starmer's leadership and Labour's stance on Palestine, despite his assurances of supporting international law and Palestinian state recognition.

Opposition to Labour's stance has mobilized independent candidates like Vasim Shabir, whose campaign focuses squarely on Gaza, aiming to disrupt Labour's hold on the constituency. Shaid Iqbal, a prominent figure in the Muslim community, expressed widespread anger over perceived failures by both major parties in upholding human rights.

While Labour strategists admit losing votes over the Gaza issue in recent local elections, they remain confident in retaining seats like Keighley and Ilkley due to broader disillusionment with the ruling Conservatives. However, Shabir suggests that generational shifts among British-born Pakistanis and Bengalis, who are increasingly disenchanted with Labour, could have long-term electoral consequences.

Amidst discussions among independent candidates about forming a new party, the electoral landscape in northern England reflects deepening divisions within the Muslim community and challenges to traditional party loyalties.
