The government in France collapsed on Wednesday after both the left and right sides of parliament voted to remove Prime Minister Michel Barnier. This is making France’s political situation even worse and could cause bigger problems for the economy.
Before the vote, Barnier spoke to the people of France. He said it was an honor to serve as Prime Minister. After the vote, Barnier will have to resign and so will his government. His time in office was the shortest in modern French history. He is expected to hand in his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday morning. The President will speak to the country later in the evening.

Barnier’s government fell after 331 members of parliament voted against him. Only 288 votes were needed to pass the no-confidence vote in the 577-member parliament. This was the first time a no-confidence vote worked since 1962. In France, the President picks the Prime Minister, but the parliament can vote them out if they don’t like the choice.
Michel Barnier was chosen to be Prime Minister after elections this year, but he had problems because he didn’t have enough support in parliament. He made some lawmakers angry when he tried to push through the national budget for 2025 without a vote. This caused no-confidence votes from both the far-right and the left-wing parties, leading to his government collapsing.
Now, President Macron has to choose a new Prime Minister, but that’s not going to be easy. Macron can’t call new elections until next July because the law says parliament has to stay in place for at least one year. For now, there will be temporary ministers running the government.
This vote means that France needs a new government to manage important issues, like the 2025 budget. If the budget is not approved, the economy could get worse. A person close to President Macron said he must choose a new Prime Minister within the next 24 hours.
Some people from the far-left party are calling for President Macron to resign and hold early elections. Marine Le Pen, from the far-right party, said her party will work with the new Prime Minister to help pass a budget that works for everyone. But another leader, Laurent Wauquiez, said the far-right and the far-left are responsible for making things unstable.
Macron has said he won’t resign, and the situation is getting harder. People are worried about what will happen next, and unions are planning protests on Thursday against possible government cuts. These protests could affect schools and transportation.
Macron also has an important event on Saturday – the reopening of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was damaged in a fire in 2019. This event will have leaders from other countries, including US President-elect Donald Trump.
Right now, France is in a tough spot with no stable government and no approved budget for 2025. There are ways to stop the country from shutting down, but this could cause more problems for the economy. France’s borrowing costs are already higher than those of Greece, which is considered a risky country for investors.
This situation in France is also affecting the European Union, which is already facing problems in Germany. This is a difficult time for both France and Europe.
Now, everyone is waiting to see who President Macron will choose as the new Prime Minister, and whether they will be able to work with parliament to fix France’s problems.
