In a very sad incident, Fauja Singh, the famous old-age marathon runner, died at the age of 114 in a road accident. People around the world knew him for running long distances even at a very old age. He showed the world that age does not stop you from staying fit and active. Though he is gone, his story will continue to inspire many people—young and old.
This article tells about his amazing life, how the accident happened, and how he will always be remembered.
Fauja Singh was born on April 1, 1911, in what is now Punjab, Pakistan. He lived as a farmer for most of his early life. He started running when he was 89 years old, which is very late compared to other athletes.
As a child, he had health problems and couldn’t walk properly until the age of five. But he never gave up. When he started running marathons in his late 80s, people were surprised and inspired. He became famous after he finished the London Marathon in 2000 at the age of 89.
Fauja Singh ran in many big races like the New York Marathon, Toronto Marathon, and many London Marathons. When he turned 100 years old, he ran a full marathon in Toronto. It took him a little more than 8 hours, but he completed it—making him the oldest person to do so.
Even though Guinness World Records could not count it officially (because he did not have a birth certificate), the world still celebrated his amazing record.
He also set many records in the 90+ and 100+ age groups. He always said that his secret was a simple vegetarian diet, staying active, and keeping his mind peaceful.
More than just a runner, Fauja Singh gave hope to people everywhere, especially older people. He told everyone that they should live healthy lives and keep moving no matter how old they are. He also stood for peace, Sikh values, and helping others.
He wrote his life story in a book, and many films and documentaries have told his inspiring journey. He also helped raise money for good causes like schools for children, support for old people, and disaster relief.
The accident happened while Fauja Singh was walking near his home in the UK. A car lost control and hit him while he was crossing the road. Even though help arrived fast, he died on the way to the hospital.
People across the world felt very sad. Social media was full of messages from fans, leaders, and sports stars who shared their love and respect for him.
Famous athletes like Mo Farah and Eliud Kipchoge said Fauja Singh was a true hero. Leaders like Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also gave their condolences. People in many cities held memorials and prayer meetings in his honor.
The Sikh community felt a big loss, as Fauja Singh was like a role model for them. Many people are already planning a memorial marathon in his memory.
Fauja Singh’s life showed the world that you are never too old to chase your dreams. He proved that you can start something new—even at the age of 89! His life broke many old ideas about aging.
Now, schools and health groups use his story to encourage older people to stay active and live healthy lives. His name will always be remembered whenever we talk about fitness, determination, and positive living.
People are already talking about how to honor Fauja Singh. Some want to name marathons or sports events after him. Others want to make a movie about his life. His family said that Fauja Singh always wanted to inspire people to live well and stay strong. They thanked everyone for their love and prayers.
