In a significant upheaval for Malaysian football, the complete executive committee of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) resigned on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, in response to a contentious issue regarding the naturalization of seven foreign-born players.
This committee, elected just 11 months prior for the 2025–2029 term, stepped down unanimously and without delay. They characterized their exit as voluntary, aiming to preserve the credibility and integrity of Malaysian football.
This mass resignation followed FIFA's stringent sanctions against FAM. In September 2025, FIFA levied a fine of around $450,000 on the association and issued one-year suspensions to seven players due to the discovery of forged documents concerning their eligibility to represent Malaysia. Each player faced individual penalties as well.
The players in question—Facundo Garcés, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, João Figueiredo, Gabriel Palmero, Jon Irazabal, and Héctor Hevel—are from Argentina, Brazil, the Netherlands, and Spain. They participated in international matches for Malaysia, including a vital 2027 Asian Cup qualifying game where Malaysia triumphed over Vietnam.
Malaysian football officials had consistently asserted that these players satisfied FIFA’s eligibility standards, claiming each had a grandparent born in Malaysia. However, FIFA’s investigators found original documents from the players’ home countries that countered these assertions, leading to the disciplinary actions.
In its official announcement, FAM expressed that resigning before completing their four-year term was a demonstration that the interests of Malaysian football took precedence over power. The association asserted that this step is crucial for safeguarding its reputation and averting further damage to the sport.
The resignation is also aimed at facilitating a thorough review of FAM’s governance and administrative processes by FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation, free from obstacles or conflicts of interest. FAM reiterated that collective accountability is vital for maintaining institutional integrity.
The outgoing leadership pledged full cooperation with international football bodies to rebuild trust among fans, stakeholders, and the broader football community. There is currently no timeline for the appointment of interim leaders or for new elections.
Acting FAM president Mohamad Yusoff Mahadi confirmed that secretary-general Noor Azman Rahman will continue to oversee daily operations. A special congress is anticipated to select a new executive committee.
Meanwhile, FAM persists in its legal confrontation with FIFA. Following an initial appeal rejection, the association escalated the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland. On January 27, 2026, FAM announced that the court had provisionally lifted the FIFA-imposed ban on the seven players, permitting them to participate while the appeal is assessed. No date for a final ruling has been set yet.
This unprecedented resignation signifies one of the most critical governance crises in Malaysian football history and places the sport’s future under international scrutiny.
