A former staff member of Vice President Kamala Harris, Jamal Simmons, has urged President Joe Biden to step down and make Harris the first woman to serve as president of the United States, even if only for a brief period. Simmons, who previously served as the communications director for Harris, made the suggestion publicly after discussing it during a talk show appearance over the weekend.

Simmons praised Biden's presidency but argued that there is one final promise he could fulfill: to act as a transitional figure. He proposed that Biden resign within the next 30 days, allowing Kamala Harris to assume the presidency, even temporarily.
“Joe Biden has been a phenomenal president, he’s lived up to so many of the promises he’s made. There’s one promise left that he could fulfil, being a transitional figure,” Simmons stated. He went on to explain that such a move would serve multiple purposes, including preventing Harris from having to oversee the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol attack, an event she was constitutionally required to preside over as vice president during the certification of the 2020 election results.
Simmons suggested that Biden’s resignation would “turn the tables on Trump,” offering a fresh political narrative and avoiding a situation where Harris, as the sitting vice president, would have to manage the politically fraught aftermath of January 6. “It would absolve her from having to oversee the January 6 transition of her own defeat,” Simmons said, referring to the divisive nature of the events surrounding the Capitol riot and its lasting political implications.
In addition to this, Simmons emphasized that such a change in leadership could be a pivotal moment for the Democratic Party. "It would dominate the news, at a point where Democrats have to learn drama and transparency and doing things the public wants to see," he said. He sees this as a defining moment for the party, helping to reshape the perception of how Democrats operate and handling a major political transition in a way that resonates with the public.
Simmons further stressed that this would not only provide Harris with an opportunity to become the 47th president but also disrupt Donald Trump’s political narrative. “It would disrupt all of Donald Trump’s paraphernalia, right? He’d have to rebrand everything,” Simmons argued, suggesting that such a move would be a powerful shift in the political landscape, especially in light of Trump’s ongoing influence over the Republican Party.
Another critical point Simmons raised was the potential impact on future women candidates. He suggested that by having Harris serve as president, even briefly, it would lessen the burden on future female candidates, who would not have to carry the weight of being the “first” woman president. "It would make it easier for the next woman president,” Simmons concluded, implying that Harris’s temporary tenure could help pave the way for future women to enter the Oval Office without facing the same historical pressures.
While the proposal is certainly bold and would mark a dramatic shift in U.S. politics, it reflects Simmons’ belief that this could be Biden’s final opportunity to create a lasting legacy and cement Kamala Harris’s place in history. The suggestion, however, has sparked debate, with many questioning the political and practical feasibility of such a move, especially given the current challenges Biden faces in office.
