In a decisive statement, Singapore has firmly declared its refusal to negotiate with Iran concerning terms for safe passage or toll fees in the Strait of Hormuz. During a recent parliamentary session, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan articulated that this passage is an inherent right for all nations—not a negotiable privilege dictated by bordering states.
He underscored that international regulations, notably the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), enshrine the right to transit passage. Specifically, Article 44 of UNCLOS mandates that nations bordering crucial maritime straits cannot impede or halt maritime navigation.
Balakrishnan clarified that Singapore's stance aligns with its enduring commitment to international navigational rights. He drew parallels between the Strait of Hormuz and other essential global waterways like the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, underlining their mutual significance for global commerce and maritime safety.
The minister further noted that Singapore is vigilantly tracking ongoing regional developments. Local authorities, including the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, are engaged in active collaboration with ship owners and international entities to safeguard uninterrupted maritime passage through the Persian Gulf.
