Egypt is currently participating in the G20 preparatory meetings in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, ahead of the highly anticipated G20 Social Summit scheduled for November 18-19, 2024, as confirmed by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meetings are aimed at finalizing key topics and negotiations for the summit’s final declaration. Representatives from the world’s largest economies will gather to discuss pressing global issues, with Egypt’s foreign policy playing a crucial role in shaping the summit’s discussions.

During the preparatory meetings, Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the significance of the ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the situation in Lebanon. Egypt's representative, Ambassador El-Etreby, noted that these issues will be central to the summit’s agenda due to their global implications. He emphasized that the G20, while primarily focused on economic issues, recognizes Egypt's efforts to mediate in the conflict and prevent further escalation.
Throughout the year, Egypt has actively participated in G20 discussions, advocating for policies to address the economic challenges facing developing nations. Egypt’s priorities in these negotiations have centered on urging the G20 to take stronger actions to support developing countries, particularly those grappling with the consequences of global economic crises. The country has also called for reforming the global economic system to improve the resilience of these nations in the face of future crises.
El-Etreby outlined Egypt’s vision for these reforms, including a comprehensive overhaul of the global financial, monetary, and trade systems. Egypt is pushing for policies that can strengthen the ability of developing nations to secure funding for sustainable development, reduce debt burdens, and address issues exacerbated by global inflation rates. Additionally, Egypt has advocated for fostering industrial localization, technology transfer—including advancements in artificial intelligence—and better access for developing countries to global markets.
This summit marks Egypt’s fourth participation in the G20 since the forum's inception. In December 2023, Brazil extended a special invitation to Egypt, allowing the country to participate in all G20 meetings during Brazil’s presidency of the group. The invitation reflects Egypt’s prominent role in both regional and international diplomacy, particularly as a key advocate for developing nations in Africa and the Arab world.
Ambassador El-Etreby further noted that this invitation also highlights the strong historical ties between Egypt and Brazil. The two nations share robust economic and political relations, with Egypt being Brazil’s primary trade partner in Africa, especially in agricultural products. Brazil, on the other hand, is Egypt’s largest trade partner in Latin America. According to Brazilian Ambassador to Egypt, Paulino Franco de Carvalho Neto, trade between the two countries reached approximately $2.4 billion in the first 10 months of 2023, underscoring the growing importance of bilateral trade relations.
The G20, which consists of the world’s largest economies representing 80% of global GDP and 75% of international trade, serves as a critical forum for addressing significant global economic challenges. The G20 works through policy coordination and cooperation among its members to tackle global crises and foster economic growth.
Brazil currently holds the G20’s rotating presidency, which started in December 2023 and will last until November 30, 2024. The 2023 G20 summit was hosted by India. The G20 membership includes the European Union, along with key global economies such as Saudi Arabia, Russia, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, and others.
Egypt’s involvement in these meetings reflects its growing role in global diplomacy, as it continues to push for more inclusive economic reforms that benefit the Global South. Egypt is committed to contributing to the ongoing dialogue within the G20 and advocating for policies that address both regional and global challenges.
