Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has taken a significant step in advancing its US operations by launching a state-of-the-art metallurgical testing laboratory at the EGA Spectro Alloys recycling plant in Minnesota. The move comes as part of a major expansion project designed to meet the growing demand for high-quality recycled aluminium.
The new lab will carry out detailed metallographic analyses and mechanical tests on finished aluminium products, ensuring that every batch meets precise specifications. Customers will also have the option to submit samples from castings or extrusions, enabling rapid troubleshooting and quality optimization.
EGA Spectro Alloys’ expansion adds 55,000 tonnes of secondary billet production in its first phase, bringing total production capacity to 165,000 tonnes of recycled aluminium ingots and billets per year. The full ramp-up of the expanded facility is expected by the first quarter of 2026.
Recycled aluminium continues to grow in importance due to its environmental benefits. Producing aluminium from scrap consumes up to 95% less electricity than primary production and generates significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions. The US market alone is projected to demand 7.6 million tonnes of recycled aluminium annually by 2033, highlighting the strategic importance of EGA’s expansion.
This move follows EGA’s acquisition of an 80% stake in EGA Spectro Alloys in 2024, reinforcing the company’s commitment to low-carbon aluminium solutions and providing customers with reliable, high-quality metal for their products.
