Dubai Tax Authorities Enhance Measures Against Double Accounting

Dubai's tax authorities are intensifying their focus on the rampant issue of “double accounting,” which is deemed a significant risk to the region's financial health and stability. Officials stressed that this practice not only undermines public funds but also disrupts the long-term investment climate.

Senior tax officials identified a lack of awareness regarding tax compliance and business ethics as a primary factor for this phenomenon. Many businesses continue to prioritize profits over their tax obligations, which can lead to long-term damages.

Moreover, risks associated with tax fraud are often underestimated by companies. Some knowingly ignore potential legal consequences, assuming the perceived benefits of evasion justify the actions, while others believe regulations are hard to enforce.

Many businesses resort to deception, maintaining dual accounting records in hopes of escaping scrutiny. This lingering mentality has greatly fueled tax evasion issues.

In response, the tax department is rolling out a rigorous set of measures aimed at better management of cash flows, minimizing cash transactions, and enhancing data interconnectivity with financial institutions in order to monitor significant transactions more effectively.

Utilizing state-of-the-art technologies like Big Data and AI, authorities plan to scrutinize financial patterns to spot unusual fluctuations, suspiciously low profits, or other indicators of double accounting, transitioning from manual inspections to a system driven by data analysis.

Furthermore, there will be enhanced regulation of e-invoices and accounting software, coupled with improved partnerships with law enforcement to accelerate investigations into potential tax fraud cases. The government will also promote public awareness initiatives to inform businesses about legal risks tied to tax non-compliance.
