Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is making a major move to improve the city’s roads, reduce traffic jams, and provide safer, more accessible streets for residents. The authority has recently completed important road projects in two areas and is actively working on upgrades in six residential neighborhoods. These projects are part of Dubai’s ongoing effort to meet the needs of its growing population and improve the quality of life for everyone living in the city.
Completed Road Projects: Making Travel Easier
1. Al Khawaneej 2 (Tolerance District):
The RTA has successfully finished road works in Al Khawaneej 2, an area under the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme, also known as the Tolerance District.
* 6 km of new internal roads have been constructed, making travel within the neighborhood smoother and faster.
* Roads now connect directly to Amman Street and other surrounding roads, improving access to the wider city.
* Residents benefit from 765 new roadside parking spaces, helping reduce the struggle to find parking.
* 178 new street lights have been installed, making roads safer at night.
* The project also included a dedicated cycling track, encouraging eco-friendly transportation and safer movement for cyclists.
This project reflects Dubai’s commitment to combining infrastructure growth with sustainable and safe travel options.
2. Jebel Ali Industrial Area 1:
The RTA has also upgraded roads in this busy industrial area. These improvements are crucial for supporting both heavy vehicles and daily commuters.
* 27 km of roads were either newly built or repaired.
* The roundabout at First Al Khail Street and Street 23 was transformed into a signalised junction, making traffic movement smoother.
* Seven new roundabouts were added to improve traffic flow for trucks and heavy vehicles.
* Each upgraded road can now accommodate up to 3,000 vehicles per hour, which helps reduce bottlenecks significantly.
* 42 km of street lighting was installed to improve visibility and safety, especially during night-time operations.
According to RTA Director General Mattar Al Tayer, these upgrades will significantly enhance commuting efficiency and reduce delays for thousands of workers and residents in the area.
Ongoing Residential Road Projects
Dubai is not just focusing on industrial areas; residential neighborhoods are also receiving extensive upgrades to make daily life more convenient. Currently, road works are underway in six residential areas, including Al Awir 1, Nad Al Sheba 1, 3, 4, Al Warqa’a, and Wadi Al Amardi.
Al Awir 1:
Al Awir 1 is a rapidly growing residential community.
* The project includes 16.5 km of internal roads, with 5 km inside the Mohammed Bin Rashid Housing Establishment project.
* A 7.5 km road now links Emirates Road to Al Awir 1, with two lanes in each direction, intersections, roundabouts, and a U-turn to connect the housing project efficiently to main roads.
* The improvements will double the area’s road capacity from 1,500 to 3,000 vehicles per hour.
* An additional 4 km lane on Emirates Road will further improve traffic flow, increasing capacity by 16% and allowing vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 110 km/h.
* Completion is expected in the second quarter of 2026.
These upgrades will make commuting to and from Al Awir 1 much faster and safer, especially during peak hours.

Nad Al Sheba 1, 3, and 4:
The Nad Al Sheba area is receiving a comprehensive internal roads upgrade.
* Projects include new roads, additional road links, cycling tracks, landscaping, and beautification.
* Existing roads are being upgraded, and pedestrian pavements near schools, parks, mosques, and shopping centers are being improved.
* The total length of new roads is 32 km, with 15 km of pedestrian walkways and cycling tracks.
* Nad Al Sheba 1 is expected to finish by the end of this year, while Nad Al Sheba 3 and 4 will complete in early 2027.
These projects are designed to support both vehicle traffic and pedestrian movement, making the neighborhoods more walkable, safer, and visually appealing.
Al Warqa’a:
Al Warqa’a is home to over 350,000 residents, making road upgrades crucial for daily commuting.
* New entry and exit points are being created directly from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
* Al Warqa’a 1 Street is being upgraded, and roundabouts are converted into signalised intersections to reduce traffic congestion.
* Additional parking facilities and street lighting are being added.
* After completion, travel time on main streets will reduce from 20 minutes to just 3.5 minutes, while trip distances will shrink from 5.7 km to 1.5 km.
* Road capacity will increase by 30%, allowing smoother access to and from the area.
This will transform commuting in Al Warqa’a, helping residents save time and reducing stress during daily travel.
Wadi Al Amardi:
The road project in Wadi Al Amardi covers 15 km of new roads, including:
* 4 km expansion of Tripoli Street
* 11 km of internal roads with paving, lighting, and parking facilities
* 405 new lighting poles and 1,000 roadside parking spaces
The upgrades will serve more than 30,000 residents, increase road capacity by 3,000 vehicles per hour, and shorten travel distances from 5 km to just 1 km. Completion is expected in the third quarter of 2026.
Benefits for Residents and Traffic
These road projects bring a number of benefits for people living in Dubai:
1. Reduced Travel Time: Roads are being widened and new lanes are being added, allowing traffic to move faster.
2. Increased Safety: Street lighting, signalised junctions, and cycling tracks make roads safer for both vehicles and pedestrians.
3. More Parking Spaces: Hundreds of new parking spots are being added in residential areas.
4. Better Connectivity: New roads connect communities to main highways and commercial areas, making commuting easier.
5. Improved Quality of Life: Beautification, landscaping, and pedestrian-friendly walkways improve the overall environment of neighborhoods.
6. Stormwater Drainage: New drainage systems are being installed to prevent flooding during heavy rains.
Dubai’s RTA is working tirelessly to modernize the city’s road network, improve traffic flow, and provide residents with safer, more convenient travel options. From residential areas like Al Awir and Nad Al Sheba to industrial zones like Jebel Ali, these projects are transforming daily commuting.
With completion dates stretching from late 2025 to early 2027, these improvements will benefit hundreds of thousands of residents, reduce travel times, and enhance the overall quality of life in Dubai. The city is moving steadily towards a modern, safe, and efficient road network that meets the needs of its growing population.
