This year's US election campaign is proving to be one of the most extraordinary in the nation's history, marked by significant courtroom battles, shocking incidents of violence, and intense debates. As candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris approach Election Day on Tuesday, here are some pivotal moments that have shaped the race.

Trump the Felon

On May 30, Donald Trump made history by becoming the first former US president convicted of felony crimes, with a total of 34 counts related to falsifying business records. This conviction stems from his efforts to cover up a hush money payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels on the eve of the 2016 election. The details of their alleged encounter were laid bare during an explosive six-week trial, with Daniels recounting intimate moments, including descriptions of their sexual encounter and even the silk pajamas Trump allegedly wore.

While this legal turmoil pulled Trump away from the campaign trail, it also ensured he remained in the headlines, drawing significant media attention. Importantly, US law does not bar him from running for office following a felony conviction, and his steadfast Republican base continues to support him, even as he faces three additional criminal cases.

Debate Drama

In a surprising turn of events, Democratic hopes dimmed when President Joe Biden, the presumed Democratic nominee, delivered a disastrous performance in a debate against Trump on June 27. At 81 years old, Biden struggled with his words and seemed to lose his train of thought, raising concerns about his fitness for the presidency. While Biden dismissed the performance as a "bad night," it sparked dissent among party donors who threatened to withdraw funding unless he stepped aside.

Post-debate polls reflected Trump's increasing lead over Biden, although the White House asserted there was no chance Biden would withdraw from the race.

Assassination Attempt

The campaign took a shocking turn on July 13 during a rally in Pennsylvania when gunfire erupted. Trump, who was addressing his supporters, initially heard popping sounds, touched his ear, and fell to the ground, blood visible on his face. Secret Service agents quickly rushed to protect him, and he was back on his feet moments later, rallying the crowd with a raised fist and the words "Fight, fight, fight!" This moment became iconic in US political history.

The gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed at the scene by Secret Service agents, and Trump escaped with only a minor graze to his right ear. The incident further galvanized his base, with Trump later proclaiming, "I took a bullet for democracy" at subsequent rallies.

Biden Says 'Bye'

On July 21, at 1:46 pm, Biden announced via tweet that he would not seek reelection, making him the first sitting president since 1968 to step aside. This unexpected decision significantly altered the dynamics of the race. Kamala Harris, the current vice president and the first female, Black, and Asian-American to hold the position, received Biden's endorsement to run in his stead.

Within two weeks, Harris secured the Democratic nomination, becoming the first woman of color to lead a major party ticket. Her candidacy immediately revitalized the Democratic base, reflected in her rising poll numbers as she began to regain ground against Trump, particularly in key swing states.

Trump's Second Scare

Trump faced another potential assassination attempt on September 15 while golfing in Florida. Gunshots rang out, but this time they came from a Secret Service agent who was thwarting what the FBI later described as an attempted assassination. The assailant, Ryan Routh, did not fire directly at Trump but was aiming a rifle from a distance before fleeing the scene when confronted by security. Fortunately, Trump was unharmed during this second alarming incident in just two months.

The Harris Surge

In the following weeks, Harris experienced a meteoric rise from relative obscurity to becoming a formidable candidate under immense pressure. A pivotal moment in her campaign occurred during a debate with Trump on September 10, where she received widespread acclaim for effectively countering his arguments.

As Election Day approaches, the race has intensified, with both candidates holding large rallies. Trump’s event at Madison Square Garden on October 27 drew significant attention, although it was marred by criticism for racially insensitive jokes made by speakers, including derogatory references to Puerto Rico. In contrast, Harris's rally on October 29 attracted tens of thousands of supporters on the National Mall outside the White House, marking the culmination of her campaign efforts.

With the election just days away, the stakes are higher than ever, as both candidates strive to connect with voters and solidify their legacies in this historic campaign.
