Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced that it will start using the cubic metre as the standard unit to measure water consumption from the March 2025 billing cycle. This change follows Cabinet Resolution No. (85) of 2023 and Ministerial Resolution No. (43) of 2024, issued by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology. These resolutions require all water meters across the UAE to stop using the imperial gallon (IG) unit.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, explained the importance of this move. "We are committed to adhering to local and international regulations to ensure that our services meet the highest standards of quality, efficiency, and reliability. The adoption of the cubic metre, which is an internationally accepted unit of measurement, is a giant leap toward aligning with international best practices. It will enable us to compare our performance with other sectors, enhance our services, and further strengthen DEWA's leadership in innovation and sustainability. This change will benefit both our customers and stakeholders in the long run."

DEWA reassured customers that there will be no need to change water meters, because the present smart meters are already cubic metre-compatible. In view of making transition easy and simple, DEWA will begin publishing both units of the cubic meters and gallons on water bills as well on the customer dashboard during a preparatory phase. The full switch to the cubic metre unit will take effect from the March 2025 billing cycle. Customers will be kept informed about the change through official communication channels.

With this update, DEWA aims to ensure clarity and ease for its customers while also keeping up with international standards. The transition to a standard unit will help make water usage calculations more accurate and uniform across different sectors.
