Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has recently completed a new water reservoir in Hatta, with a capacity of 30 million imperial gallons (MIG) of desalinated water. The project cost about AED 86 million and includes building supporting structures and extending pipes for water flow. This new reservoir is designed to help meet Dubai's growing demand for water and to improve the city's water system.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, explained that this new reservoir is part of a larger plan for the development of Hatta. This plan, called the Comprehensive Development Plan for Hatta, was started by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and the Ruler of Dubai. The goal of this plan is to improve the infrastructure in Hatta, including water supply, to support the area's growth.

Al Tayer also mentioned that this new reservoir in Hatta is not the only project DEWA is working on. This year, two other water reservoirs were completed in Lusaily and Enkhali. Additionally, a 120 MIG reservoir is being built in Hassyan. By the first quarter of 2025, DEWA’s total water storage capacity will increase to 1,121 MIG.
Furthermore, DEWA is working on a special project to store six billion gallons of water in underground aquifers. These aquifers will be used to store water that can be accessed during emergencies. The goal is to have a strategic reserve that can supply more than 50 million gallons of desalinated water per day for up to 90 days in case of any emergencies. This will ensure that the stored water remains clean and safe, even if there are external factors that could affect its quality.
This project shows DEWA's dedication to improving Dubai's water supply system. It will make sure that Dubai has enough water to meet the needs of its residents, businesses, and visitors in the future. The improvements in water storage and delivery will help the city continue to grow sustainably and efficiently.
