Dhaka, Bangladesh – The death toll from Friday’s powerful 5.5-magnitude earthquake in Bangladesh has risen to 10, with hundreds injured, as a low-magnitude tremor struck Saturday morning, rekindling fears among residents.
The minor quake, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, hit Ashulia, north of Dhaka, at 10:36 am local time, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department reported. Although less destructive than the previous day’s earthquake, the tremor rattled homes and deepened anxiety in the capital.
In Ashulia and surrounding districts, dozens of houses already weakened by Friday’s quake now show new cracks. Residents spent the morning salvaging belongings and inspecting structural damage. Shahnaj Parvin, 44, recounted clinging to a mahogany tree during the tremor and returning home to find glassware shattered and walls damaged.
The government has mobilized its emergency operation centre to assess the full scale of damage and coordinate rescue and relief efforts. While Saturday’s tremor caused no additional casualties, it served as a reminder of Bangladesh’s vulnerability to seismic activity.
Experts note that Bangladesh’s geographic location makes it prone to frequent earthquakes. While smaller aftershocks are expected following a major quake, the combination of dense population, old buildings, and limited preparedness heightens public concern.
