Australia’s cricket captain Pat Cummins has shared a positive update about his recovery and says he has a “half chance” of playing in the second Ashes Test in Brisbane. Cummins missed the opening Test in Perth because of a back injury, which also forced him to step down as captain for that match. In his place, Steve Smith took over the leadership role, while Scott Boland filled in as a fast bowler.
Cummins gave the update during a short commentary appearance on Fox Sports TV. He explained that his back is feeling better and that he has already completed some important training sessions in Perth. According to him, the plan included one long bowling session of around 10 overs followed by lighter days to help his body recover properly. He said this routine has been working well, and his progress is steady.
He mentioned that he still needs a few more bowling sessions before the team management can make a final decision. Even then, he remains hopeful. Cummins believes his condition is much better compared to a few weeks earlier, which gives him confidence that he might be ready for the day-night match at the Gabba starting on December 4. The Australian team and fans are waiting eagerly, as his return would strengthen both the bowling attack and on-field leadership.
However, while the news about Cummins sounds positive, the same cannot be said for top-order batsman Usman Khawaja. Khawaja suffered a back injury during the Perth Test and could not take up his usual opening position in either innings. Cummins said Khawaja struggled with movement after his back “flared up” while attempting a jumping effort in the slips. Because of this, he was unable to bat at the top of the order.
Khawaja’s injury casts doubt on his availability for the second Test. Losing him would be a big blow for Australia, as he is one of their most dependable and experienced batters. The team will likely monitor his condition closely over the coming days before deciding whether he can play in Brisbane. If he is ruled out, Australia will have to look for alternative opening options to maintain stability at the top.
The Ashes are always highly competitive, and injuries to key players can influence the balance of the series. With England pushing hard and Australia trying to protect their dominance at home, the return of Cummins would be a major boost. His pace, accuracy, and leadership are important assets for the team, especially in the challenging conditions of a pink-ball Test at the Gabba, where fast bowlers generally get good support from the pitch.
On the other hand, Khawaja’s potential absence adds pressure on the remaining batting lineup to perform consistently. It also opens an opportunity for young or less experienced players to step up and prove themselves on one of the biggest stages in cricket.
With the second Test approaching, both teams will finalize their preparations. The Australian camp will hope for two things: that Cummins continues his recovery and is declared fit, and that Khawaja’s injury improves enough for him to take part in the match. Over the next few days, medical assessments and training sessions will determine the final squad.
As the countdown to Brisbane continues, the cricket world is watching closely. The Ashes series always brings excitement, and the possible return of Australia’s captain adds another layer of anticipation.
