Oscar Piastri’s bid to secure his first win since August and revive his Formula One championship hopes faced another setback after he qualified fifth in a wet and challenging Las Vegas Grand Prix session on Friday. The Australian driver now faces a tough task in Saturday’s race, especially with his McLaren teammate and championship leader Lando Norris starting from pole position for the third race in a row.
With only two rounds remaining after Las Vegas and a maximum of 58 points still available, Norris is already 24 points ahead in the title standings. Piastri has been out-qualified by Norris in the last three races and beaten in the previous six, adding extra pressure on him to perform and minimize the points gap in Nevada. Despite this, Piastri remains hopeful about making progress in the upcoming race.
“There were a few things at the start of the lap that didn’t go well from an operational point of view,” said Piastri. “I don’t know how much time there was to improve, but I know there was more we could have used. We have a strong car that works well in different conditions, so I hope to make up some positions in the race.” Piastri’s last victory came at the Netherlands Grand Prix in August, and he is eager to return to winning form.
Team principal Andrea Stella noted that Piastri could have qualified third behind Max Verstappen if he had avoided a yellow flag on his final lap. “It was a little unlucky for Oscar to find a yellow flag at the end. P3 was possible, but P5 is still a solid starting point. We have a competitive car this year,” Stella said. He also emphasized that Las Vegas has been a difficult circuit for McLaren in previous years, but investments in understanding the track’s unique characteristics have paid off.
Piastri’s focus will now be on race day, where he aims to maximize his performance and potentially reach the podium. Both drivers will try to extract the most from their cars in what is expected to be a demanding night race on the Nevada street circuit. The wet conditions in qualifying tested drivers’ skills, timing, and control, and Piastri now hopes to turn his fifth-place start into a strong race result.
Despite the setback, McLaren remains optimistic. The team has shown strong pace in wet and dry conditions, and Piastri’s car is capable of performing well on race day. “We will do our best to finish on the podium with both cars,” Stella added, underlining the team’s determination to secure valuable points in the championship battle.
Oscar Piastri’s fifth-place qualifying highlights the challenges he faces against teammate Norris and other top drivers in Formula One, especially in difficult conditions like those in Las Vegas. While qualifying may not have gone perfectly, the Australian remains focused on the race, aiming to gain positions, collect points, and keep his championship hopes alive.
