Renowned crocodile wrangler Matt Wright has received a five-month prison sentence after his conviction for tampering with evidence related to a helicopter crash that tragically took the life of his co-star Chris “Willow” Wilson, leaving the pilot severely injured. The sentencing has reignited public interest in one of Australia’s most talked-about legal cases.
In August, the star of Netflix and National Geographic was found guilty of misleading the police and pressuring a seriously injured witness following the 2022 crash in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. On Friday, Acting Justice Alan Blow ruled that Wright would serve 10 months in prison, with the option to suspend his sentence after five months, along with a A$5,000 fine. Wright was noted to exhibit “no remorse”, but the judge characterized him as unlikely to reoffend.
Though the maximum penalty for his actions could have reached up to 15 years, the court considered Wright's positive contributions to society and character references deemed exemplary by the judge. Following the verdict, his legal team has indicated intentions to appeal, suggesting further developments in Wright's sentencing could emerge.
The incident under scrutiny occurred in February 2022, during a crocodile egg-collecting venture in remote Arnhem Land, roughly 500km from Darwin. Wilson, who was hanging from a sling beneath the helicopter, tragically fell 25 metres to his death. The pilot, Sebastian Robinson, survived but sustained life-altering injuries, including a traumatic brain injury and punctured lungs. Although Wright was not aboard, he was one of the first responders at the scene of the crash.
Prosecution presented evidence that Wright misled investigators concerning the helicopter’s fuel level amid the crash. Secret audio recordings allegedly contradicted his claims that the tank was half full when questioned by law enforcement. Additionally, Wright was accused of visiting Robinson in the hospital and exerting pressure to alter flight records, fearing an investigation into a prevalent practice in the area known as “popping the clock”, a method of falsifying flight times to delay maintenance costs.
In court, Robinson claimed amnesia regarding the crash and refuted suggestions of heavy drug use despite traces of cocaine being found in his system, though not exceeding aviation limits. He acknowledged the standard procedure of disconnecting the sling during emergencies, which he may have performed.
Another charge against Wright, alleging he solicited a friend to burn maintenance documents, has led to a hung jury and remains under legal consideration, separate from the crash ramifications.
Throughout the trial, witnesses lauded Wright’s significant influence within the aviation and wildlife communities. Robinson noted that Wright was viewed as an idol by many, especially younger individuals who often complied with his requests. Wright’s celebrity has surged globally through his shows, transforming the Matt Wright case into a focal point of international news.
As sentencing approached, prosecutors emphasized the need for imprisonment due to the gravity of Wright's actions, particularly regarding his repeated attempts to influence Robinson's testimony. Wright's defense lawyer implored the court to separate his celebrity status from the case and argued that his testimonies arose from loyalty to his friend.
The sentencing of Matt Wright stands as a pivotal moment in the ongoing investigation into the helicopter crash, with an anticipated appeal likely continuing to attract attention not only in Australia but worldwide.
