After a historic 43-day closure, the United States government is set to reopen as Congress passed a key funding bill on Wednesday, bringing an end to the longest shutdown in US history. The measure, which has already cleared the Senate, will be signed into law by President Donald Trump later on Wednesday, ensuring federal employees receive back pay and disrupted services are restored.
The Republican-led House of Representatives approved the bill with a vote of 222-209. The legislation provides funding through January 30, offering financial relief to hundreds of thousands of federal workers and restarting critical programs, including air-traffic control operations and food assistance for millions of Americans.
“This vote marks a crucial step in restoring government functions and supporting citizens reliant on federal programs,” said lawmakers following the approval. While Republicans largely rallied behind the measure, Democrats voiced concerns over the lack of commitments on extending federal health insurance subsidies, which are due to expire at the end of the year.
Funding and Protections
The bill extends government funding while adding approximately $1.8 trillion annually to the federal budget, currently totaling $38 trillion. It safeguards federal workers from layoffs through January and guarantees retroactive pay for those affected by the shutdown. Additional provisions include security enhancements for lawmakers and Supreme Court justices and the uninterrupted continuation of critical food assistance programs.
Political Repercussions and Public Response
Despite the legislation ending the shutdown, neither party claimed a decisive victory. Public sentiment remains divided, with a recent poll showing 50% of Americans blame Republicans, and 47% hold Democrats responsible for the standoff. Critics warned that the shutdown highlighted ongoing partisan tensions and left vital government operations temporarily crippled.
The House returned to session after a long recess intended to pressure Democrats, coinciding with high-profile political events, including the release of documents related to former Trump associate Jeffrey Epstein and the swearing-in of newly elected Democrat Adelita Grijalva.
The end of the shutdown brings immediate relief for federal employees and citizens dependent on government services. Air travel and food assistance programs can begin to stabilize, and vital economic data from federal agencies will resume. The agreement, however, leaves key debates on healthcare subsidies unresolved, setting the stage for further legislative discussions in the coming weeks.
