Chisinau, Moldova — A growing divide within Moldova’s Orthodox Christian community resurfaced on Wednesday, as the country’s largest church moved to reject claims that it operates as a “Russian church.” The controversy has reignited longstanding tensions between two rival Orthodox institutions — one aligned with Moscow and the other with Bucharest.
Over 90% of Moldova’s population identifies as Orthodox Christian, but the faithful are split between two dominant entities: the Moldova Metropolis, which remains subordinate to the Russian Orthodox Church, and the Metropolis of Bessarabia, which answers to the Romanian Orthodox Church. Neither has full ecclesiastical independence, adding to the complex religious and political dynamics in the country.
The dispute erupted when the Romanian-linked Metropolis of Bessarabia accused the Moscow-affiliated church of “mass deception,” alleging that it misleads believers about its true loyalties. In response, the Moldova Metropolis firmly denied being a proxy of the Russian Orthodox Church, asserting its spiritual autonomy and role in preserving national religious unity.
Religious experts say the conflict reflects broader geopolitical struggles, as Moldova continues to balance its historical and cultural ties with both Russia and Romania. The Orthodox Church, long a pillar of Moldovan identity, now stands at the heart of a debate over national sovereignty and spiritual allegiance.
Despite growing public scrutiny, both sides maintain influence over large portions of Moldova’s population. Analysts warn that unless reconciliation efforts are pursued, the rift could deepen, further dividing communities at a time when unity is critical for Moldova’s future.
