New Zealand finished their T20 series against the West Indies with a strong victory in Dunedin on Thursday. Swing bowler Jacob Duffy played a key role by taking four wickets for 35 runs, helping New Zealand win the fifth and final Twenty20 match by eight wickets. With this result, New Zealand clinched the series 3-1 after a confident all-round performance.
West Indies began their innings poorly after New Zealand captain Mitch Santner chose to bowl first. The visitors quickly lost wickets and were struggling early in the game. Only Roston Chase, who scored 38 runs, and Romario Shepherd, who hit 36 off just 22 balls, managed to resist New Zealand’s bowling attack. Their efforts helped the team reach a total of 140 all out, a modest score given the conditions.
New Zealand’s bowlers were dominant from the start. Kyle Jamieson struck in the second over, removing Alick Athanaze with a caught-and-bowled dismissal. Then, Duffy’s devastating third over changed the game completely as he picked up three wickets for just one run, leaving the West Indies reeling. His accurate swing bowling earned him the Man of the Match title and made him the Player of the Series for his consistent performance throughout.
After losing early wickets, West Indies’ captain Shai Hope tried to set an aggressive tone by hitting the first ball of the match for six, but the strategy backfired as wickets kept tumbling. Rovman Powell managed only 11 runs before falling to a wild shot, leaving the visitors at 48-5 after the powerplay. Jason Holder tried to stabilize the innings, forming a 42-run partnership with Chase, but once both were dismissed, West Indies’ hopes of setting a big target faded away.
Shepherd provided late fireworks with a few fours and three sixes, lifting the team past the 100-run mark. However, he holed out at long-on, giving Duffy his fourth wicket and his tenth of the series. Jimmy Neesham contributed both with the ball and in the field, taking two wickets for 31 runs and three catches, wrapping up the innings in the 19th over.
Chasing 141 for victory, New Zealand’s openers made the task look easy. Tim Robinson got off to a quick start with a rapid 45 off 24 deliveries, hitting several boundaries. His partner Devon Conway played a calm and steady innings, finishing unbeaten on 47. Together, they guided the team to victory with more than three overs to spare, showcasing both aggression and control.
Captain Mitch Santner praised his team’s performance, especially the bowlers. He said, “We knew there might be something in the wicket, but our seamers took early wickets, which is always important in T20 cricket. The way we have bowled has been outstanding.”
On the other hand, West Indies skipper Shai Hope admitted that his team was not fully prepared for the match. He said, “We need to be ready from the first ball. I don’t think we were today, but I must commend the players for their effort.” Despite the loss, he expressed confidence that the team would learn and improve for the upcoming matches.
With this victory, New Zealand sealed the T20 series 3-1, continuing their strong home record. The teams will now shift focus to the three-match One Day International (ODI) series starting on Sunday in Christchurch, followed by three Test matches in December. The West Indies will aim to bounce back in the longer formats, while New Zealand will look to maintain their dominance at home.
