A Chinese court has sentenced a teenage boy to life in prison for the murder of his classmate. The case, which took place in Hebei province, has sparked a national debate about how China handles juvenile offenders.
The crime involved three boys, all under the age of 14 at the time. They were accused of bullying their 13-year-old classmate, surnamed Wang, for a long period before killing him in an abandoned greenhouse. The attackers reportedly used a shovel to beat Wang and then buried his body.

This case has drawn a lot of attention because of the violent nature of the crime and the question of how the law should deal with young offenders. One of the boys surnamed Zhang, was found guilty of intentional homicide and sentenced to life in prison. Another boy surnamed Li, was sentenced to 12 years in jail. The third boy surnamed Ma, was found not guilty of directly harming Wang but was sentenced to correctional education.
In 2021, China changed its law to lower the age of criminal responsibility from 14 to 12 for certain serious cases. These include cases where someone is killed in "ruthless" ways. The Hebei case is believed to be one of the first cases where the new law was applied.
The court explained that since the defendants were over 12 but under 14 at the time of the crime, they should be held responsible for their actions under Chinese law. The prosecution described the killing as especially cruel and the situation as very bad.
Under Chinese law, murder is a serious crime and can lead to long prison sentences or even the death penalty. This case has raised many questions about how young people should be treated in the justice system, especially when they commit such violent crimes.
