Veteran India footballer Sunil Chhetri has called on the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to urgently restart the Indian Super League (ISL) season. In a strong appeal shared on social media, Chhetri emphasized the unity of the players and their shared desire to return to the field. The joint statement, endorsed by top Indian footballers including Sandesh Jhingan, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, and Lallianzuala Chhangte, expressed their growing concern over the delay in the start of the tournament.

In his heartfelt message on Instagram, Chhetri wrote, “We want to play, and now.” The message was quickly shared by several Indian players, turning it into a nationwide call for action. The post reflected the players’ frustration as the ISL, which usually begins in September, remains postponed well into November. “Our anger, frustration, and distress have now turned into desperation — desperation to play the game we love, in front of our fans and families,” read the joint statement from the players.

The ongoing crisis began after the AIFF’s tender for the league’s commercial rights failed to attract any bidders. The November 7 deadline passed without a single submission, leaving the future of the country’s top-flight football league uncertain. The ISL’s delay has left players, clubs, and fans anxious, with no clear timeline for when competitive football will resume in India.

The players have urged AIFF officials to “do whatever it takes” to bring back the ISL season. “This is a plea to all those involved in running our sport in the country,” the joint statement said. “India needs its football season now more than ever. We remain ready to walk onto the pitch the moment we are told we can.” Chhetri’s message was not only emotional but also symbolic, representing the growing call from players for leadership and clarity.

The AIFF’s failed tender process has had serious consequences. With no commercial partner secured, several clubs have paused or scaled down operations. Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Kerala Blasters have suspended training sessions, while Chennaiyin FC and Inter Kashi have delayed salary payments to players. The situation has left many footballers without competitive matches for months, affecting both morale and match fitness.

In response to the crisis, the AIFF is planning to approach the Supreme Court of India to seek changes to the ISL’s current governing framework. Justice L. Nageswara Rao, who was appointed by the Court to oversee AIFF affairs, has held talks with federation officials to find a solution. The discussions are expected to focus on restructuring the league’s financial and administrative management to attract new investment.

The joint statement reflects a rare moment of unity among Indian footballers across clubs and regions. “We stand united in our efforts to get the season underway,” said the statement. Players have maintained professionalism despite the uncertainty, continuing their fitness routines and staying ready for action. “All we ask of those running our beautiful game is to match our desperation with honest intent,” Chhetri’s message concluded.

The Indian Super League is the country’s most-watched football tournament and a key platform for player development. It has helped Indian footballers gain international exposure and improved the sport’s popularity nationwide. A prolonged suspension could undo years of progress and discourage sponsors and fans alike. For players, the ISL represents not just competition but also livelihood and pride.

The AIFF now faces pressure from both players and clubs to act swiftly. Reports suggest the federation may propose an interim model to restart the ISL while continuing discussions with potential commercial partners. Officials have assured that every possible measure is being considered to protect the league’s structure and ensure the smooth resumption of matches.

Despite the crisis, optimism remains among players and fans. Many believe the AIFF will find a solution soon, restoring India’s football calendar to normalcy. For Chhetri and his teammates, the message is clear — they are ready to play the moment the opportunity arrives. Their united call has reignited public attention on the issue, reminding everyone that the spirit of Indian football remains unbroken, even in difficult times.
