OpenAI has just broken its own records. CEO Sam Altman shared on X (formerly Twitter) that ChatGPT gained an amazing one million users in just one hour after a new feature was released. This new feature allows users to create images, and it has been really popular, especially with people making pictures in the style of Studio Ghibli.

Altman pointed out how incredible this growth was, saying that when ChatGPT first launched 26 months ago, it took five days to reach one million users. But now, it only took one hour. This shows how quickly the interest in the tool has grown, with many people excited to try out the new image features.
This fast growth happened after OpenAI added a new feature to ChatGPT, which allows users to create images directly in the program. Users can either type a description or upload a photo, and the tool will create an image based on that. This is different from the past, where people had to use other tools like DALL·E for such images.
The most popular trend is using ChatGPT to make images in the style of Studio Ghibli. Many users have been asking the tool to turn their selfies, pictures of pets, family photos, and even scenes from movies into artwork that looks like it came from the famous Japanese animation studio. This has caused a lot of creative work to spread on social media sites like X, Instagram, and Reddit.
But all this growth is also causing some problems. Altman shared that the system is being overworked, saying "our GPUs are melting" because so many people are using the feature at once. He also asked users to be careful and not use the feature too much.
This sudden rise in users is similar to when ChatGPT was first launched in 2022, where it took just five days to reach one million users. But this time, the number of users grew in just minutes, showing how much more popular the tool has become.
OpenAI has not yet given an updated number of total users, but the growth seems to be happening very fast. If it continues at this pace, the number of users could keep increasing quickly.
Whether OpenAI’s system can handle the large number of users is still to be seen. But one thing is clear: using tools to make art online is no longer just a small interest—it is something everyone is trying, and it is growing quickly. The combination of easy-to-use tools and the ability to create fun, high-quality art has made AI-generated images a big part of online culture.
