Chandigarh Police Busts Drug Gangs Linked to ISI

Post by: Layla Badr

The Operations Cell of the Chandigarh Police has successfully caught two international drug-peddling gangs. In total, four people were arrested, including a woman from Tanzania. One of the gangs was operating from Goindwal Jail in Punjab, and the other one was based in Delhi.

During the investigation, the police found out that the gang was connected to Pakistan's spy agency, ISI. They were also sending drug money to Pakistan through illegal money channels called hawala.

The police recovered many things from the accused, including:

  • 297.40 grams of heroin
  • 100 cocaine crack balls (47.10 grams)
  • One country-made pistol
  • ₹5,200 drug money
  • One Swift car
  • One drug-weighing machine

The arrested people are:

  • Akashdeep Singh, also called Akash
  • Shamsher Singh, also called Shera
  • Gurlal Singh, also called Lala
  • Shufaa, also called Shufee, who is a citizen of Tanzania and living in Delhi

Akash, Shera, and Lala were arrested under FIR number 76 at Police Station 36, Chandigarh. Shufaa was arrested under FIR number 35 at Police Station 17, Chandigarh. All of them are charged under the NDPS Act, which deals with crimes related to drugs.

The police had received secret information that two big international drug gangs were working in Chandigarh. A team led by Inspector Ranjit Singh arrested Akash and Shera and found 297.40 grams of heroin with them.

Police said Akash and Shera were working for Gurlal Singh, who is currently in Goindwal Jail. In a separate raid, the police also caught Shufaa at the ISBT bus stand in Sector-17, Chandigarh. She had 100 cocaine crack balls with her. Shufaa lives in Uttam Nagar, Delhi, and is believed to run a drug network between Delhi and Punjab.

Police also said that Shufaa was earlier arrested in 2018 for having a large amount of heroin and had been sentenced to 10 years in jail.

But that’s not all. Police also found a shocking link between the drug gang and spying activities for ISI. Shamsher and his cousin Gurlal were in contact with an ISI agent in Pakistan. They were also working with Bhawani Singh, a railway worker who was tricked into spying by a Pakistani woman named Nimi. Bhawani had shared secret details about Indian Army vehicles, weapons, and training centers with the ISI. Rajasthan Police are also looking into the roles of Shamsher and Gurlal in this spying case.

The arrests happened after the police set up checkpoints based on the secret tip. Akash was caught near ISBT Sector-43, Chandigarh. Shamsher tried to escape but was caught after a night chase through wheat fields near the India-Pakistan border in Punjab.

Later, the police got permission to bring Gurlal Singh from jail for questioning. Investigations are still going on to find out where the drug money went and who else is part of this network.
