Discontent is escalating within the Liberal Party of Canada, as more than 20 Members of Parliament (MPs) are pushing for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation following recent electoral defeats in Toronto and Montreal. Sources close to the situation have confirmed that dissatisfaction among party members has reached a critical point, prompting a series of secret meetings among frustrated MPs.

The unrest within the Liberal caucus began to simmer after the surprising loss in the Toronto-St. Paul’s byelection in June. This dissatisfaction intensified with the return of Parliament and peaked after the party’s defeat in the Montreal byelection. Trudeau's absence, alongside his chief of staff, Katie Telford, from a recent summit in Asia allowed discontented MPs to gather and strategize for a potential leadership change.

An effort is underway to publicly pressure Trudeau to step down, with reports suggesting that "at least 30 to 40 MPs" are prepared to sign a document advocating for a change in leadership. However, the number of dissenting MPs, while significant, may still fall short of the critical mass needed for a successful challenge to Trudeau's leadership. The Liberal Party currently holds 153 seats in Canada’s House of Commons, making the situation more complex.

The dissenting MPs are working on a document described as a pledge rather than a traditional letter, aimed at securing a commitment from their colleagues to advocate for Trudeau's resignation. This document serves as a binding agreement in the event of any pushback from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). One MP who signed the document emphasized its importance, stating, "This is an insurance policy. We needed to act before the pressure from the PMO intensifies."

Trade Minister Mary Ng, who is returning to Canada from Laos with Trudeau, expressed her disappointment regarding the MPs' actions, reiterating her full confidence in the prime minister.

Adding to the urgency of the situation, a parliamentary pact with another party, which had helped maintain Trudeau's government, collapsed in September. Later that month, Trudeau managed to survive an attempt by the opposition Conservative Party to trigger an election, but the internal pressures within his own party are now mounting significantly.

As the situation unfolds, the future of Trudeau's leadership remains uncertain, with the Liberal Party grappling with the implications of internal dissent and electoral challenges.
