Canada-US Air Traffic Plummets Over 70% Amid Trump’s Tariff Conflict

The number of people flying between Canada and the United States has dropped sharply, falling by more than 70%. This decline comes as trade tensions grow because of new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

Aviation data company OAG reported that flight bookings between the two countries saw a major decrease, especially between July and August. These months are usually the busiest for travel. When comparing ticket reservations from March 2024 to March 2025, bookings for flights between April and September fell by 71-76% compared to the previous year.

Due to this drop in demand, airlines have reduced more than 320,000 seats on Canada-US routes by the end of October. Travel experts say fewer Canadians are booking flights to the US because of the uncertainty caused by rising tariffs and political tensions.

Canadian PM Criticizes US Tariffs
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke out against the latest round of US tariffs, calling them a “direct attack on Canadian workers.” His comments reflect the growing economic strain between the two countries. This conflict is now affecting not only trade but also travel.

Canadians Hesitant to Travel to the US
Aside from economic issues, some Canadians are becoming uneasy about traveling to the US. This is partly due to recent arrests of foreign nationals by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These incidents have made some travellers nervous about their safety.

With fewer people flying across the border, airlines may soon have to rethink their long-term plans for Canada-US routes. If the trend continues, there could be even fewer flights available, making travel between the two nations less convenient.
