Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to announce significant funding to support French-speaking African nations and initiatives aimed at promoting the French language during the Francophonie summit. This announcement will cap off Trudeau’s visit to France, where the summit is being held.
On Saturday, Trudeau is expected to confirm that the Canadian federal government will allocate $16 million to bolster key areas in African Francophone countries. The funds will be used to improve access to education, promote the health and safety of women, girls, and youth, and enhance community security. This financial commitment reflects Canada's ongoing efforts to strengthen its ties with African Francophone countries and support their development in vital sectors.

In addition to this funding, Canada will also set aside $1.6 million to support various scientific research projects conducted in French, promote student mobility, and improve youth employability. These funds will also help expand content on a French-language streaming platform, a move aimed at boosting the accessibility and availability of French-language media content.
On Friday, as part of the summit's program, Trudeau participated in a discussion focused on the implications and challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI). While the conversation centered on the AI revolution, leaders at the summit also held sessions addressing how French-speaking citizens are being affected by digital transformation in the modern age.
The Francophonie summit, which takes place every two years, provides a platform for French-speaking countries to come together and discuss strategies for promoting the French language and cultural ties. This year, however, the event is also marked by pressing international concerns, particularly the escalating war in the Middle East.
Lebanon, a member state of the Organisation de la Francophonie, has been caught in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. On Thursday, the Israeli military urged civilians in southern Lebanon to evacuate specific areas, hinting at a potential expansion of its ground operation against Hezbollah. This situation is casting a shadow over the summit's discussions.
Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly expressed her concern about the situation and confirmed that she will engage in discussions with Lebanon’s Information Minister during the summit. Joly has been actively working with international partners to address this crisis and met with her French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot, to explore ways to bring peace and stability to the region.
In a joint statement, Joly and Barrot also condemned Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, particularly its devastating impact on children. They denounced war crimes, including murder and sexual violence against Ukrainian children, and highlighted the tragic attacks on schools and hospitals. The statement also condemned the illegal transfers and deportations of Ukrainian children to Russian-held territories.
This Francophonie summit is not only serving as a forum to reinforce the use of the French language but has also become an important stage for addressing global crises affecting many of its member states.
