As people get older, many begin to feel discomfort or stiffness in their knees. Climbing stairs, sitting on the floor, or walking long distances can become painful. According to doctors, this happens because the joints and tissues that support our knees slowly weaken with age. However, simple supplements like calcium and omega-3 fatty acids can help keep knees healthy and flexible.
Dr Aditya K. Agrawal, Associate Director of Orthopaedics at Regency Hospital in Kanpur, explained that joint care should begin early, not after pain starts. He said that regular movement, eating balanced meals, and adding certain supplements to the diet can help maintain joint strength and prevent long-term damage.
Calcium, glucosamine, and omega-3 are among the top supplements that doctors recommend for daily knee health. These nutrients support cartilage—the soft tissue that cushions the bones—and help reduce pain and swelling.
Glucosamine, a natural compound found in cartilage, is often used to support smooth knee movement. It helps maintain the cushioning between bones and can reduce discomfort during activities like walking or climbing. Dr Agrawal suggests that people who often feel strain in their knees or have a family history of arthritis should consider glucosamine early, but only after talking to their doctor. The usual suggested dose is around 1,500 mg per day, preferably taken with food.
Another important nutrient for joint health is omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil and plant sources like flaxseed. Omega-3s are well known for their anti-inflammatory effects. They can ease stiffness, especially in the morning or after long periods of sitting. People with chronic knee pain or rheumatoid arthritis may benefit from taking these supplements regularly, as omega-3 helps reduce swelling and supports smooth joint movement.
Calcium is also vital for strong bones and healthy joints. Without enough calcium, bones can weaken, leading to higher chances of injury or pain. Pairing calcium with vitamin D3 helps the body absorb it better. Doctors recommend choosing supplements that include both nutrients for better results.
Dr Agrawal stressed that supplements should not replace a healthy diet or active lifestyle. They work best when combined with regular stretching, moderate exercise, and nutrient-rich meals. “You should start caring for your joints before pain becomes a daily problem,” he said. “A little care now can prevent stiffness and weakness later in life.”
Many nutrition brands offer joint-support products containing glucosamine, collagen, and omega-3s. These supplements help maintain flexibility and provide comfort during daily activities. However, experts advise consulting a healthcare professional before starting any supplement plan to ensure safe dosage and avoid side effects.
The key to lasting knee comfort is consistency. Taking care of your knees with proper movement, diet, and the right supplements can help you stay active as you age. Small steps—like adding calcium-rich foods, eating fish, or using natural oils—can make a big difference in keeping your joints strong and pain-free for years to come.
