New Delhi— In a recent letter addressed to the US House of Representatives, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has accused the Biden Administration of exerting significant pressure on Meta to censor certain content on its platforms. The letter outlines Zuckerberg's concerns regarding the administration's actions and reveals a series of contentious interactions between Meta and government officials.

Zuckerberg's letter indicates that Meta was pressured by senior officials from the Biden Administration, including those from the White House, to remove or restrict certain COVID-19-related content, including humor and satire. He elaborated that this pressure persisted for several months in 2021 and led to Meta making changes it now regrets. "With the benefit of hindsight and new information," Zuckerberg stated, "we wouldn't make those changes today." He expressed regret over not being more vocal against this pressure.

The letter also details Zuckerberg’s criticism of the administration's approach. "Ultimately, it was our decision whether or not to take content down, and we own our decisions," Zuckerberg said. He labeled the government's actions as wrong and indicated that Meta should have been more forthright in opposing such pressure. Moving forward, Zuckerberg emphasized Meta’s commitment to upholding its content standards independently and stated, "We're ready to push back if something like this happens again."

In addition to discussing content censorship, Zuckerberg addressed an incident involving a New York Post story on allegations of corruption related to Joe Biden’s family and Burisma. He recounted how the story was temporarily demoted while awaiting fact-checker review, following an FBI warning about potential Russian disinformation. Zuckerberg conceded that the decision to demote the story was misguided and noted that Meta has since revised its policies to prevent similar situations in the future. "We've changed our policies and processes to make sure this doesn’t happen again," he added, highlighting that Meta no longer temporarily demotes content in the US while awaiting fact-checkers.

The letter also reiterated Zuckerberg’s commitment to maintaining a non-partisan stance in supporting electoral infrastructure. He emphasized that his goal is to remain neutral and avoid any perception of bias in Meta’s operations. "I know that some people believe this work benefited one party over the other. My goal is to be neutral and not play a role one way or another or even appear to be playing a role. So I don't plan on making a similar contribution this cycle," Zuckerberg stated.

This correspondence provides a detailed account of Zuckerberg's stance on recent controversies involving Meta and underscores the ongoing debates about the role of tech companies in content moderation and their interactions with government authorities.
