Before Barack Obama became the first Black president of the United States, Diana Vahabzadeh was a registered Independent who had never cast a vote for a Democrat. However, Obama’s inspiring 2008 campaign changed her perspective, and since then, she has leaned more towards the left. On Thursday, she joined thousands at a rally in Pittsburgh, showing her support for Kamala Harris, as Obama kicked off a crucial campaign tour across swing states ahead of the upcoming election.

"I’ve loved him for years," Vahabzadeh said. "This is a great opportunity to see him and support the ticket." The rally took place in a university gym, where the atmosphere was electric. The slogan "Yes We Can" was creatively adapted to "Yes She Can," adorned on posters and displayed on an electric scoreboard, generating excitement among the crowd.
As Obama entered the venue, U2’s “City of Blinding Lights” filled the air, setting the stage for his much-anticipated speech. With his trademark charisma, he framed Republican nominee Donald Trump as a self-serving businessman focused solely on personal gain, contrasting him with Harris, whom he described as "as prepared for the job as any nominee for president has ever been."
In an impassioned plea to the audience, Obama rallied the crowd, emphasizing the importance of voting: "Do not just sit back and hope for the best -- get off your couch and vote. Put down your phone, and vote!" His fervent exhortation was met with cheers as he urged support for Kamala Harris in her bid for the presidency.
The impact of Obama’s words resonated deeply, especially with young supporters like Tia Douglas, a 20-year-old college student who was only a child when Obama first took office. “It felt so powerful to hear him speak,” she said, her excitement palpable. “Listening to him made me even more excited to get out there in the next 26 days.”
The Harris campaign is banking on the star power of the 63-year-old former president, who led the country from 2009 to 2017, to boost their chances in the tight race against Trump. As Obama took the stage, he was met with thunderous applause from a crowd that reflected a rich diversity of backgrounds and ages.
“I love seeing and hearing his articulate self,” said Valerie Brown, a 66-year-old retired public school teacher. She expressed hope that Obama’s words might inspire those who are hesitant about supporting Harris.
Harris, who temporarily filled in for President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee over the summer, initially enjoyed a surge in the polls, capturing significant attention and raising an impressive billion dollars in campaign funding. However, the race remains competitive, particularly in battleground states like Pennsylvania, where polls show fluctuating support between candidates.
“I get it, why people are looking to shake things up,” Obama said, addressing the crowd, while also drawing laughter with a nod to his previous campaign’s mantra: “I mean, I’m the hopey-changey guy.” He continued, “What I cannot understand is why anybody would think that Donald Trump will shake things up in a way that is good for you, Pennsylvania.”
Leading up to the rally, supporters eagerly lined up around the block outside the University of Pittsburgh field house, excited to witness the collaboration of Harris and Obama. Tia Douglas expressed admiration for the duo, stating, “I think it’s really amazing to see them join forces for the greater good.”
Douglas’s friend, Julia Palchikoff, a journalism major, reflected on the significance of the moment, stating, “Being in a swing state in an election like this, it’s just a historical moment, and I feel like I have to do my part.” She fondly recalled her childhood admiration for Obama and expressed optimism for the future under Harris’s leadership.
