Bangladesh continues to feel the impact of a strong earthquake that struck near Dhaka on Friday, as officials confirmed that the death count has risen to 10. Hundreds of people were injured, and many homes suffered cracks and structural damage. The powerful 5.5-magnitude quake shook the capital city and nearby districts, causing widespread fear among residents.

A day after the major earthquake, another tremor hit the country on Saturday morning at 10:36 am. The national meteorological department said the latest jolt measured 3.3 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre in Ashulia, just north of Dhaka. Experts explained that small aftershocks are common after a major quake, but for many people, the repeated tremors have increased anxiety.

Residents living near the Ashulia region said they were frightened by the second jolt. One local resident, who lives near Friday’s epicentre, said she had never experienced such a powerful tremor in her life. She explained that cracks had appeared in several homes in her neighbourhood, and many families were still afraid to stay inside. She also described how glassware in her house shattered during the quake.

Following Friday’s earthquake, the government activated the national emergency operation centre to assess the damage and coordinate rescue and relief efforts. Officials are inspecting damaged buildings and monitoring the situation closely.

Experts from the Earthquake Observation and Research Centre said Bangladesh is naturally prone to earthquakes because of its geographic location. They noted that while minor tremors are frequent, a major earthquake of this scale had not affected the country in over a century. They added that smaller aftershocks are expected and usually do not cause severe destruction.

With millions of people living in densely populated areas, authorities are urging citizens to stay alert and follow safety guidelines. Rescue teams continue to check affected regions, while engineers assess the stability of damaged buildings.

As aftershocks persist, many people remain worried, but officials assure that monitoring systems are active and relief operations are underway to support those affected.
