In a stern warning issued amid rising tensions with Israel, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has invoked the concept of "divine wrath" to signal that any form of retreat or compromise by Iran would be met with severe repercussions. This comes following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political chief of Hamas, who was killed last month during an official visit to Tehran, an event Tehran attributes to Israeli intelligence.
Khamenei's comments were a direct condemnation of what he termed "enemy psychological warfare," aimed at pressuring Iran to reconsider its stance on retaliation against Israel. The 86-year-old leader emphasized that any form of retreat, whether military, political, or economic, would not be tolerated and would result in significant divine punishment.
The assassination of Haniyeh has put Iran in a challenging position as it weighs its response. Khamenei criticized the tendency to overstate the power of adversaries, citing historical examples of U.S., British, and Israeli efforts to undermine Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. He argued that governments should rely on the strength of their people and accurately gauge their adversaries' capabilities rather than yielding to external pressures.

Despite the intense rhetoric from Tehran, Iran has yet to take immediate retaliatory action, a move interpreted by some analysts as a strategic pause. Iranian officials have dismissed Western calls for restraint, accusing these nations of turning a blind eye to what they describe as Israel's "genocidal" actions in Gaza, while expecting Iran to forgo its right to respond to Haniyeh's killing.
Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, has publicly supported Khamenei's hardline position, though there are reports suggesting he may have privately expressed concerns about the potential consequences of further escalation.
In response, Israel has warned that any direct aggression from Tehran would be met with a forceful reaction. Israeli officials have reportedly informed both the U.S. and European nations that an Iranian strike on Israeli territory would prompt a swift and decisive counterattack.
