A tropical disturbance in the Coral Sea is poised to transform into a cyclone, targeting Australia's northeast later this week, as stated by the meteorological agency on Tuesday. This occurrence follows a month after the region experienced substantial damage from tropical Cyclone Jasper.
The weather system, situated approximately 800 km off Queensland's coast, is expected to escalate to a category 3 cyclone, posing a significant threat with heavy rain and the potential for life-threatening flash flooding.
During a press briefing, Laura Boekel, a forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology, remarked, "It is intensifying and will likely reach cyclone strength overnight tonight or during Wednesday... a coastal crossing is most likely overnight on Thursday."
Storm warnings extend along 900 km of Queensland's northeast coast, projecting intense rainfall and destructive wind gusts of up to 150 km per hour in some tourist towns along the Great Barrier Reef.
Boekel emphasized the heightened risk of flash flooding due to heavy rain in already saturated regions. These storm warnings coincide with an extended national holiday weekend and the conclusion of the school summer break, prompting officials to advise tourists to reconsider camping and traveling to remote areas.
Although the cyclone is expected to weaken after making landfall, numerous inland regions are still likely to experience heavy rains over the weekend and into the following week. Boekel cautioned, "This could be a very widespread as well as a very long-duration event."
In December, Cyclone Jasper wreaked havoc in Queensland's northern regions, compelling some residents to evacuate and causing disruptions in various towns.
