Arunachalam Vellayan, chairman emeritus of Coromandel International and former chairman of the Murugappa Group, passed away in Chennai on Monday, November 17, 2025, after a prolonged illness. He was 72.
He is survived by his wife, Lalitha Vellayan, sons Arun Vellayan and Narayanan Vellayan, and grandchildren.
According to an official statement, he played a key leadership role within the Murugappa Group for several decades, contributing to the company’s strategic growth and long-term vision. His commitment to value creation and organisational integrity helped strengthen the Group’s standing as one of India’s most respected business conglomerates.
Career and Contributions
Arunachalam Vellayan served on the boards of multiple Murugappa Group companies, including Coromandel International Ltd. and EID Parry Ltd., both of which he chaired during his tenure.
He was also associated with several external organisations, holding board positions in Kanoria Chemicals & Industries Ltd., EXIM Bank, and Indian Overseas Bank.
Over the years, he contributed to various industry bodies such as the Southern India Chamber of Commerce, Fertiliser Association of India, Indian Sugar Mills Association, and the All India Cycle Manufacturers Association.
He also chaired the Board of Governors at the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIM-Kozhikode), playing a role in strengthening academic and institutional leadership.
Education and Honours
Mr. Vellayan was an alumnus of The Doon School, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Aston University (U.K.), and the University of Warwick Business School (U.K.).
In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded honorary Doctor of Science degrees by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and Aston University.
Statements and Condolences
In its official statement, the Murugappa Group described him as a leader known for his “sharp business insights, clarity in decision-making, and unwavering commitment to the Group’s values.” The organisation noted that his leadership continues to inspire future generations.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed condolences, calling his passing a significant loss for Tamil Nadu’s industrial sector. He extended his sympathy to the family.
Venu Srinivasan, Chairman Emeritus of TVS Motor Company, also shared his condolences and remembered his long association with Mr. Vellayan. He described him as a personable, insightful business leader with deep knowledge of international trade, economics, and management. Calling him a “tall leader” and an “institution builder,” he said the loss was deeply felt by the industry and the country.
