In an extraordinary milestone for space exploration, the Canadian Space Agency has proudly announced that the crew of Artemis II reached the farthest distance from Earth ever achieved by humans. This historic feat took place on April 6, 2026, during a successful lunar flyby.

The crew comprised Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen and NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch. Together, they journeyed approximately 406,773 kilometers from Earth, surpassing the previous record set during the Apollo 13 mission in 1970.

During the lunar flyby, the spacecraft circled the Moon's far side, providing the crew a unique chance to observe areas that had never been directly seen by humans before. A standout moment of the mission was the breathtaking "Earthrise," where Earth rises above the Moon's horizon, offering an emotional view of our planet from the depths of space.

The spacecraft came as close as about 6,545 kilometers to the Moon's surface. This journey represents the inaugural crewed test flight as part of the Artemis program, which is designed to return humans to the Moon and lay the groundwork for future missions to distant destinations like Mars.

Jeremy Hansen made history as the first Canadian astronaut to orbit the Moon, symbolizing Canada’s significant contributions to global space exploration, particularly in robotics and advanced space technology.

Having completed the flyby, the crew is now en route back to Earth. The Orion spacecraft is utilizing the gravitational forces of the Earth and Moon to navigate its return. The mission is projected to conclude with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego on April 10.

Officials have hailed this mission as a tremendous success, marking a substantial advancement for future exploration. The images and data gathered during the expedition are anticipated to yield valuable insights for future space travel and assist scientists in preparing for upcoming endeavors.

The Artemis II mission showcases the importance of international collaboration in space exploration, heralding a new era for human spaceflight. It also serves as an inspiring tale for generations to come, illustrating how far humanity has come in exploration and what adventures await beyond the Moon.
