Liam Payne, 31, fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires on October 16 and died. Tests showed that Payne had alcohol and a type of cocaine called "pink cocaine" in his system. The authorities believe Payne used a mix of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in the 72 hours before his death.
Paiz denies giving drugs to Payne, although he admits to using drugs with him. He says he was a big fan of Payne and respected him. Paiz’s lawyer, Fernando Madeo Facente, said in an interview that Paiz and Payne had long talks and discussed meeting up for a private time together.
Along with Paiz, five others have also been charged, including the hotel manager, a receptionist, and one of Payne’s friends. They are accused of not helping Payne when he was in a vulnerable state.
Prosecutors believe Paiz sold cocaine to Payne twice on October 14, just two days before Payne’s fall. Paiz’s lawyer is still defending him, saying he is innocent.
Liam Payne’s sudden death shocked fans around the world. He was buried on November 20. His girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, and his former bandmates from One Direction, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, and Niall Horan, attended his funeral.
